Top-Ranked Men's Lightweights Open Home Schedule Saturday
April 02, 2010 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Head coach Marty Crotty might have been a little nervous heading into last weekend's season opener against Navy, considering it was his head coaching debut and his team's first real competition of the season, but he went in knowing that his team put forth maximum effort into the offseason.
And that knowledge would be the key in calming his nerves during Princeton's season-opening victory over Navy. Princeton won the top two varsity races against Navy, including a thrilling .8-second victory over the Midshipmen in the second varsity race. Navy claimed wins in the 3V and novice races.
The first varsity victory was Princeton's 14th consecutive regular season win, dating back to the 2008 season opener, and assured the Tigers would be ranked No. 1 in the nation when the first collegiate poll came out this past week.
Of course, being ranked first in early April doesn't hold a candle to being there after the EARC or IRA championships. And Crotty expects that tough competition throughout the 2010 season will help push Princeton to get faster throughout the year. The tough competition includes both of Saturday's opponents, as No. 5 Georgetown and No. 7 Columbia will make their way to Lake Carnegie.
Georgetown is making its 2010 season debut, but the Hoyas finished fourth at the 2009 IRA national championships. Columbia, led by former Princeton lightweight assistant coach Scott Alwin, is also making its season debut. The Lions placed seventh at the 2009 IRA national finals.
This weekend starts a long run of home regattas for the Tigers, who will host both Cornell and St. Joseph's in two weeks for The Platt Cup. During the final weekend of April, Princeton will host Penn for The Wood-Hammond Cup. If form holds throughout the month, which is unlikely in the parity-rich sport of men's lightweight rowing, the top three teams in the country will meet at Lake Carnegie on May 1 in The Goldthwait and Vogel Cups regatta. No. 1 Princeton will join No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 Yale for one of the most historic events in the sport.
