May 20, 2010 | Women's Swimming and Diving
The 2010 Ivy League champion women's swimming and diving team recently announced its season-ending team award winners, while also announcing the two talented competitors who were elected to lead the team into next season, when the league championship meet will return to DeNunzio Pool.
2010 TEAM HONORS
The Class of 1974 Women's Swimming & Diving Award: Courtney Kilkuts
Originally presented by Cathy Corcione and CeCe Herron, members of the Class of 1974 - Awarded to that upper-class woman who has shown consistent dedication to the sport and who has done the most to inspire team unity and enthusiasm
The Class of 2000 Susan S. Teeter Award: Courtney Kilkuts
Awarded
annually to that senior class swimmer or diver who, during her four
year career, has distinguished herself as both an outstanding student
and a valuable member of the Women's Swimming and Diving Team
Kilkuts, a senior co-captain, capped a brilliant career in 2010 by winning her fourth straight 200 IM title in the Ivy League Championships. A 2008 NCAA qualifier and current Princeton record-holder in the 100 breast, Kilkuts was a leader both in and out of the pool for a Princeton team that won its ninth Ivy League in 11 years.
The Women's Freshman Swimming & Diving Award: Sarah Furgatch
Presented for outstanding sportsmanship and performance by a freshman
Furgatch recorded a trio of top-three finishes in her first HYP meet and then became a top scorer for Princeton at the Ivy League Championships. One of five freshmen on the conference team, she was the only Princeton member of the Class of 2013 to qualify for three individual finals. She had a weekend-best sixth-place finish and recorded an NCAA B-cut time in the 200 breast.
Friends of Princeton Swimming & Diving Award for Women: Leslie Bargmann
Presented
to a member of the women's swimming and diving team whose perseverance
in practice and effort in competition have led to greatest improvement
overall, during a single year or over a period of years
Bargmann was a member of the Princeton conference team in 2010 and recorded two top-five finishes during Princeton's sweep of the HYP meet at DeNunzio Pool.
The Jerry Horton Award for Women's Most Valuable Swimmer or Diver: Alicia Aemisegger
Established
by Jerry Horton '42, longtime friend of Princeton Swimming, and
presented to the woman swimmer or diver whose consistently outstanding
performance contributed most to the team's success.
Aemisegger, who was named Princeton's Female Athlete of the Decade by GoPrincetonTigers.com, is a four-year winner of this honor and leaves one of the greatest athletic legacies ever at Princeton. She won three more individual Ivy League titles this season, giving her the maximum 12 for her career, and earned three NCAA All-America honors. She ended her career with a second-place finish in the mile at the NCAA Championships; the only other time a Princeton women's swimmer finished as high was in 2007, when Aemisegger took second in the 400 IM.
2011 CAPTAINS
The 2010-11 team captains will be senior Ming Ong and junior Meredith Monroe. Ong reached a career-best three championship finals at the 2010 Ivy League championship meet and placed fourth in the 1000. She also placed sixth in the 200 back and eighth in the 500. She also had three top-four finishes at the HYP meet, which Princeton swept at DeNunzio Pool. Monroe is a 2008 All-America performer who won her first Ivy League title this past winter in the 200 back. She swam in both the 100 and 200 back in the 2010 NCAA Championships, although her All-America performance came in the 2008 800 free relay, when her anchor leg was enough to secure a share of Princeton's first All-America relay since 1981.
