Princeton Hockey in the Pros: 2009-10 Season Recap

PRINCETON (6/10/10) -- With its win in the sixth game of the Stanley Cup Finals last night, the Chicago Blackhawks put an end to the 2009-10 professional hockey season. The season saw a total of 16 Princeton men's hockey alums play professionally.
Chicago defeated the Philadelphia Flyers and Darroll Powe '07 in the Stanley Cup finals. Powe, who became the first Tiger to appear in a Stanley Cup final series, played in his second season for the Flyers and scored nine goals and added six assists for 15 points in 63 games. He also played in all 23 Flyer playoff games and garnered one point, an assist in the opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals in Chicago.
Powe was one of three Tigers to appear in the NHL in the 2009-10 season and was joined by Jeff Halpern '99 and George Parros '03 playing at the top level of pro hockey. Halpern completed his 10th NHL season with the Los Angeles Kings after bring traded from Tampa Bay to the West Coast at the trade deadline. Halpern totaled nine goals and 10 assists for 20 points in 71 games between the two teams. Halpern has 131 goals and 185 assists for 316 points in 720 career games in the NHL.
Parros completed his fifth season in the NHL and his fourth with the Anaheim Ducks, the team with which he won a Stanley Cup in 2007. Parros name appears on the cup and he appeared in the playoffs, but not in the Cup Finals. This season Parros had four goals in 57 games played.
An additional 13 Princeton graduates played in the North American minor leagues. Mike Moore '08 and Brett Westgarth '07 were teammates on Worcester Sharks in the American Hockey League for the second-straight season. Moore battled through injuries early in the season to appear in 64 games and scored three goals and 19 assists for 22 points, besting his rookie season point total by four as one of the team's assistant captains. Moore was also his team's Man of the Year for the second season in a row.
Westgarth started the season with Bridgeport but was traded to the Sharks midseason. He totaled three goals and eight assists in 64 games between the two teams. His brother Kevin '07 also played a full season in the AHL and recorded a career-high 11 goals and 14 assists for 25 points in 76 games played. Westgarth had appeared in nine games the previous season in the NHL with Los Angeles.
Two other Tigers got a chance to play in the AHL last season as call-ups. Kyle Hagel '08 spent most of his season in the ECHL with the Las Vegas Wranglers, but also appeared in nine games for the AHL's Rockford Icehogs, while Dustin Sproat '06 played in four games for the Milwaukee Admirals when called up from the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones.
Sproat had a big season in Cincinnati, helping lead the Cyclones to the ECHL's Kelly Cup. In 66 games, Sproat scored 24 goals and added 35 assists for 59 points. He then added 11 goals and nine assists in 24 playoff games. Sproat's team topped the Idaho Stealheads and Brandan Kushniruk '09 in the Kelly Cup Finals. Kushniruk scored 11 goals and added 12 assists in 63 games for the Stealheads and was the team's Most Improved Player and Unsung Hero. Hagel added seven goals and eight assists in 42 games for Las Vegas.
Daryl Marcoux '07 played in his third full ECHL season and second with the Stockton Thunder, collecting three goals and 14 assists in 71 games, while serving as an assistant captain. Brett Wilson '09 also played in the ECHL for the Trenton Titans and had 13 goals and 24 assists in 27 games.
Grant Goeckner-Zoeller '07 and Lee Jubinville '09 both spent the 2009-10 season in the Central Hockey League. Goeckner-Zoeller played in his second season with the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees and averaged better than a point per game with 27 goals and 41 assists for 68 points in 64 contests. Jubinville, a Hobey Baker Award candidate while at Princeton, played in 41 games for the Texas Brahmas and had 14 points.
Three Tigers that played at Princeton for the 2009-10 season signed on to play professionally once the Princeton hockey season came to an end. Zane Kalemba '10 dressed for the AHL's Norfolk Admirals in several games as a back up, while Jody Pederson '10 and Mark Magnowski '10 made appearances for the AHL's Providence Bruins and ECHL's Victoria Salmon Kings, respectively. Cam MacIntyre '10 also signed with the San Jose Sharks following the season, but did not appear in a pro game.
