Women's Lacrosse Assistant Altig Takes Job at Penn State
July 28, 2010 | Women's Lacrosse
Altig will coach the goalkeepers and defense at Penn State. She won't be the only coach on the staff with Orange and Black in her blood.
Altig was offered the job by head coach Missy (Holmes) Doherty who was hired as head coach earlier in this month. Doherty spent three years as an assistant coach at Princeton from 2001-03, during the Tigers' tremendous run of three Ivy League Championships and back-to-back NCAA Championships in 2002 and 2003.
Second assistant coach Tara (Rowlyk) Hohenshelt, who coaches the offense, is also a former Princeton assistant coach. She was an assistant during the 1998 season when the team went 12-5 and reached the NCAA Quarterfinal round with all-stars Cory and Cristi Samaras, Tice Bruke, Lucy Small, Julie Shaner and Johanna Deans.
"I'm extremely excited to have Amy on board at Penn State," Doherty said. "She is extremely driven, and knows what it takes to coach at a high level. She will be instrumental in many areas of the program here at Penn State."
During Altig's three seasons at Princeton she worked with primarily with the Tigers' goalies, including All-America goalkeeper Erin Tochihara. A first-team all-region selection, Tochihara finished the 2009 season ranked second in the Ivy League in goals against average and sixth in the nation, was first in save percentage in the league and fourth in the nation in that category.
The Tigers put together a record of 33-19 during her three years and held opponents to 9.27 goals per game. The team qualified for the NCAA Tournament twice making it to the quarterfinals both times.
Prior to coming to Princeton, Altig was the first assistant coach at the University of Richmond for two seasons. She played her collegiate lacrosse at James Madison, graduating in 2005.
In addition, Altig was an alternate on the 2009 U.S. World Cup Team, and has been a member of several U.S. Elite and Development Teams. In the summer of 2008, she earned a spot on the U.S. Touring Team that traveled to the Czech Republic to compete in the Prague Cup.
Altig and the Nittany Lions will visit Princeton for a non-conference match in the spring.
