Men's Lightweight Crew Claims Pair Of EARC Yearly Honors
September 22, 2010 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
After another magical spring, the Princeton men's lightweight crew has been honored with a pair of annual EARC awards. The varsity eight was named the EARC Crew of the Year, and head coach Marty Crotty was named the EARC Lightweight Coach of the Year after his first season.
The 2010 Princeton lightweights came into the season with a bullseye on their chests, as they were defending EARC, IRA and Henley champions. By the end of the regular season, the Tigers were not even the No. 1 team in the country. A tight loss to Harvard in the season finale left the Tigers ranked second going into the postseason.
But this was an experienced group of rowers who knew how to take it up one more level. Princeton avenged its loss to Harvard by winning the EARC title, and then surged in the final 750 meters to clear the field at IRAs and repeat as national champion.
And while last season was an exciting one for Princeton, the future remains bright for the two-time league and national champion. Only two seniors, Jack Leonard and James Donovan, graduate from the varsity eight, and the junior varsity completed a perfect regular season and won the EARC title under first-year head coach Glenn Ochal.
Princeton also earned a team honor at the EARC Championships; for the first time since 2003, the Tigers won the Jope Cup, given to the program with the most EARC team points.
