Ruth's OT Goal Lifts Men's Water Polo to Win at Johns Hopkins
September 25, 2010 | Men's Water Polo
Princeton outscored the Blue Jays 2-1 in each of the first two quarters to build a 4-2 lead at halftime, but the Blue Jays used a five goal third quarter to take a one-goal lead into the final period of play. Princeton rallied back in the final quarter to force overtime and then won in the extra session.
Ruth's goal came in the first overtime session and was the only goal scored in the six extra minutes of action. It was Princeton's third 6-on-5 goal of the game and proved to be the deciding marker. Ruth was one of seven Tigers to score in the win. Chris Cottrell, Tommy Donahue and Matt Hale all added two goals in the win.
Hale had a strong all-round game with his two goals, one assist and seven steals, while Tim Wenzlau had two assists to go along with a goal scored.
Mike Merlone went the distance in the Princeton goal, making 15 saves to lead his team to the win. His total included five saves in the first quarter and four in the final frame of regulation. Two of the four saves in the final quarter came on 5-meter chances. He also made a single save in each overtime period.
Princeton is now 6-2 overall and opened the CWPA Southern Division schedule with a win. Princeton will look for a second win later tonight when it plays at 18th-ranked Navy.
