PRINCETON (1/2/11) -- The Princeton men's hockey team returns to league play on Monday night when it plays host to Quinnipiac at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton defeated Quinnipiac when the teams played in November but both teams come into Monday night's game playing well.
Princeton was in action last Wednesday and Thursday and picked up wins over Bowling Green and Connecticut to claim the 2010 Toyota UConn Hockey Classic Championship. The tourney title was Princeton's first since the 1998-99 season when the Tigers took the Mariucci Classic at Minnesota.
In Princeton's opening game the Tigers fell behind 2-0 but rallied for the win, scoring once in the second period and three times in the final 10 minutes to earn the win. It marked the second time in three games that Princeton trailed 2-1 with less than 10 minutes left, but rallied to win, as the Tigers also accomplished the feat back on Dec. 10 against UMass Lowell. Kevin Lohry had Princeton's first two goals in the win, and then assisted on Derrick Pallis' game winner on the power play. Princeton's fourth goal came from Andrew Ammon in the win.
A day later the Tigers took an early lead on a goal from Taylor Fedun and never trailed in a 4-1 win over the host Connecticut Huskies. Jeremy Goodwin and Eric Carlson scored their first collegiate goals in the win and Lohry sealed the win with an empty-net goal as Princeton ran its win streak to five games and has now won 10 of 12 games since opening the season with three-straight losses.
Lohry's three goal and one assist tournament performance placed him on the All-Tournament team along with Ammon and Fedun. Fedun was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring in the UConn win and notching an assist against Bowling Green in the opener. Princeton got contributions from its full team at the UConn Tournament as 16 players recorded at least one point during the two games.
It has been nearly a month since the Tigers played a league game and the Tigers will return to league action on Monday night. Princeton has played four non-league games since its win over St. Lawrence on Dec. 4. Including that win, Princeton has outscored its opponents 25-8 over the last five games.
The Tigers remain tied atop the ECAC Hockey standings with Yale with 12 points although the Bulldogs do have three games in hand over Princeton. Dartmouth ranks the third in the league standings, a point behind Princeton and Yale, while Clarkson and Monday's opponent, Quinnipiac, are tied for fourth with nine points.
Princeton and Quinnipiac meet on Monday for the second time this season. Princeton defeated the Bobcats 3-0 on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving thanks to goals from Cam Ritchie, Fedun and Lohry. Sean Bonar made 23 saves in the win to record his first collegiate shutout.
The win was Princeton's second in a row over Quinnipiac and moved the Tigers to 8-5 all-time against the Bobcats. The series is currently tied 3-3 in games played at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton won last year's meeting at home by a 4-3 scored in overtime. Dan Bartlett completed a hat trick and a four-point night when he scored the game winner in the extra session.
Quinnipiac is currently 10-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the ECAC. The Bobcats enter the game off an impressive sweep of eighth-ranked Nebraska-Omaha on Thursday and Friday at home. Quinnipiac won both games by a goal despite being outshot handily in both games. As a result Quinnipiac has now three of its last four games.
Following Monday's game, Princeton will remain at home and close its intersession schedule on Friday and Sunday when Cornell and Colgate visit Hobey Baker Rink.
