PRINCETON (1/23/11) -- The Princeton men's hockey returns from a 16-day layoff to host Sacred Heart on Tuesday night at Hobey Baker Rink. Princeton last played on Jan. 9 when it defeated Colgate 5-4 and has been in first-semester final exams for the past two weeks.
Princeton went into the break 6-1-1 in its last eight games and has gone 11-3-1 in its last 15 games after opening the season with three consecutive one-goal losses. The Tigers last played on January 9 when the Tigers rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to defeat Colgate 5-4. Kevin Lohry led the Princeton attack in the win, scoring two goals and adding an assist for his second three-point performance in a five-game span.
At the time the win had Princeton tied for first in the ECAC Hockey standings, but two weeks later, Princeton sits in a tied for third as many of the league teams made up their games in hand while the Tigers were in the exam break. Princeton's 7-4-1 league mark is identical to Dartmouth's as the pair are tied for third. Union is in second-place, two points ahead of the Tigers and Big Green, while the pair has a one-point edge on fifth-place Rensselaer.
Princeton hosts Sacred Heart on Tuesday night in the first-ever meeting between the two schools. Sacred Heart is one of five current NCAA Division I teams that Princeton has not yet faced. The other four are Canisius, Ferris State, RIT and Northern Michigan. Princeton has played seven of the teams in Atlantic Hockey, but only four since the league was formed. Princeton is 4-2-1 in those games, most recently winning at Connecticut in late December.
Sacred Heart is currently 3-15-5 overall and 3-9-5 in Atlantic Hockey. The Pioneers were swept at Niagara last weekend, but took three of four points from Air Force the previous weekend at home. Sacred Heart has faced five ECAC Hockey teams this season and have dropped six games to them, losing twice to Union, and once to Colgate, Yale, Clarkson and St. Lawrence.
After Tuesday's non-conference finale the Tigers begin the five weekend-10 game race to the ECAC Hockey playoffs. The stretch begins this weekend at St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
