Women's Swim/Dive Team Honors Seniors With Home Win Over Dartmouth
January 23, 2011 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Led by a pair of wins apiece from freshmen Lisa Boyce and Andrea Kropp, the Princeton women's swimming and diving team ran its winning streak to 35 and honored its senior class with a 131.5-106.5 victory at DeNunzio Pool.
The victory was more than just a sendoff for a talented six-person senior class (Lauren Benjamin, Julie Kochman, Carolyn Littlefield, Nicole McAndrew, Ming Ong and Megan Waters); it also got Princeton back into competition after seven weeks away. The Tigers know they will need to be even sharper in one week, when they head to New Haven, Conn., for the annual H-Y-P competition.
Princeton also dedicated the meet to freshman Khristin Kyllo, a member of the Tiger softball team who passed away earlier this month. The team wore purple (Khristin's favorite color) ribbons on its jackets and will do so throughout the season.
Princeton opened the meet by going 1-2 in the 300 medley relay. The team of Meredith Monroe, Kropp, Carter Stephens and Waters won the event in 2:46.58, while the team of Karen Wang, Rebecca Lewinson, Boyce and Jillian Altenburger placed second in 2:50.00. Both teams topped the first Dartmouth finisher by three full seconds.
The first individual race produced a dramatic dead heat between Princeton's Sarah Furgatch and Dartmouth's Danielle Kerr. Furgatch was more than six seconds off the lead after 200 yards, but she made up her deficit in an impressive breast leg, and the two left the field and touched the wall together at 4:31.52.
Boyce, one of two Princeton freshmen (Kropp) to already own a school record), won the 200 free in 1:52.20. The Tigers had four in the top six, with Karen Wang taking fourth (1:55.43), Laura Slater taking fifth (1:56.07) and Benjamin taking sixth (1:56.28).
Dartmouth's Mary Van Metre won a close showdown with Princeton sophomore Kathy Qu in the 50 free. Van Metre took the race in 24.71, while Qu placed second in 24.98. Kerry Gruendel took fourth in 25.17.
Kropp got Princeton back on the winning side by winning the 100 IM in 59.17. Stephens, fresh off her win in the 400 IM, took second in 1:01.14.
A trio of divers put on a competitive show in the three-meter competition, but Princeton freshman Rachel Zambrowicz earned the win with 291.83. Dartmouth's Katy Feng placed second with 287.86 points, while Littlefield finished third with 286.27 points.
Waters, another member of a senior class which will look for its third Ivy League title in four years when the league meet comes back to DeNunzio in February, won the 100 fly in 56.32. Qu followed by leading a 1-2-3-4 Princeton finish in the 100 free. Qu won in 52.78, while Stephens finished second in 52.86. Junior Aislinn Smalling placed third in 53.31, while Laura Loughran took fourth in 53.33.
Boyce earned her second win of the meet by taking the 100 back in 56.70, while Gruendel finished fourth in 1:00.91. Teammate Maureen McCotter outlasted Dartmouth's Christine Kerr in a close finish to take the 400 free in 3:58.71. Princeton's Kasey Morris placed third in 4:02.37.
There would be another close finish in the one-meter diving competition, and another Tiger took first. Christina Kirkwood won with 293.55, less than three points more than Dartmouth's Feng. Princeton junior Courtney Fieldman ended the event third with 277.49 points.
Kropp won the 100 breast in 1:03.78, while Altenburger placed second in 1:05.82. Princeton had four of the top five finishers in the event, with Hannah Cody (1:08.48) and Caitlin Baran (1:09.27) finishing fourth and fifth, respectively.
The final event of the dual was the 300 free relay, which the Princeton quartet of Waters, Qu, Smalling and Furgatch won in 2:24.23. The team of Loughran, Lewinson, McCotter and Charlotte Leib placed third in 2:27.91.
The annual meeting between Princeton, Harvard and Yale always produces one of the most exciting meets of the regular season. It will be held over two days next weekend, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. and going into Saturday at noon. Check back with GoPrincetonTigers.com for a full preview of the weekend.
