PRINCETON (1/5/11) -- The Princeton men's hockey team hosts Cornell and Colgate this weekend at Hobey Baker Rink as it looks to extend its current hot streak into the exam break. Princeton is unbeaten in its last six games and has improved to 10-5-1 overall after opening the season with three losses.
Sunday's game with Colgate will be televised live nationally on ESPNU. As a result the game will not be available on GoPrincetonTigers.tv in the United States. However fans in Canada will be able to view the game with their GoPrincetonTigers.tv subscription. Friday's game with Cornell will be available worldwide on GoPrincetonTigers.tv.
The Tigers unbeaten streak hit six games with a 1-1 tie on Monday night against Quinnipiac. Princeton and Quinnipiac traded second period goals as Jeremy Langlois put the Bobcats ahead early in the second period, but Derrick Pallis answered with an unassisted goal late in the same period to draw Princeton even. Mike Condon made 25 saves in the tie for Princeton.
The tie gave Princeton a point in the ECAC Hockey standings and moved Princeton into first overall in the league standings, although the Tigers do have several games in hand on second-place Yale. The league standings will sort themselves out over the coming weeks as Princeton takes the two weekends after this off during final exams, while the remaining league teams will be in action with league games.
Princeton's current six-game unbeaten streak is its longest since Princeton won seven in a row early in the 2008-09 season. As a result of Princeton's run, the Tigers have entered the National Top 20 at No. 19 in the USCHO.com Division I Poll after receiving votes in four of the five previous weekly polls. The Tigers were last ranked in November of 2009.
The Tigers close out their five-game intersession schedule this weekend with league contests against Cornell and Colgate. Princeton is 2-0-1 in the first three games of the stretch with wins coming over Bowling Green and Connecticut and a tie with Quinnipiac on Monday.
Princeton starts this coming weekend against Cornell on Friday night. Princeton trails its all-time series with Cornell 77-51-7 overall and 30-24-5 in games played in Princeton. The Tigers have had the upper hand in the series as of late winning eight of the last 13 games played between the two, including the last three. Last season Princeton dropped its first game against the Big Red, but the Tigers topped Cornell 3-2 at the Florida College Classic and then again 5-3 at home in February.
Earlier this season Princeton picked up a 2-1 overtime win over the Big Red in Ithaca. Eric Meland gave Princeton a first period lead, which stood at 1-0 until the final 10 seconds when Cornell drew even with its goalie pulled. Princeton answered midway through overtime when Will Ford netted his first collegiate goal.
Cornell is currently 4-8-1 overall and 2-4-0 in ECAC Hockey. The Big Red is winless in its last three games, all of which went to overtime, tying Alabama-Huntsville and falling to St. Cloud State and Maine in overtime at the Florida College Classic. Cornell has league wins this season over Quinnipiac and Clarkson.
Princeton concludes the weekend on Sunday afternoon against Colgate in front of a national television audience on ESPNU. Colgate leads the overall series 47-42-6 overall but Princeton holds a 23-21-4 in games played at home. Princeton has controlled the series over the last six seasons, winning eight of 11 meetings despite losing twice to the Raiders a season ago. Earlier this season Princeton picked up a 4-3 win in Hamilton behind a four-point performance from Andrew Calof and two Mike Kramer goals.
Colgate enters the weekend 3-14-1 overall and 0-5-1 in ECAC Hockey. The Raiders have dropped their last five games, three in overtime, with losses to Niagara, Robert Morris twice, Boston College and Dartmouth. Colgate has two wins over Army this season and one against Sacred Heart.
Following the weekend, Princeton will have a 16-day layoff during first semester final exams. The Tigers will resume their schedule on Jan. 25 at home against Sacred Heart.
