January 09, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (1/9/11) - Kevin Lohry had two goals and an assist, including the goal that put the Tigers ahead for good as the 19th-ranked Princeton men's hockey team rallied from a pair of one-goal deficits to defeat Colgate 5-4 on Sunday afternoon in front a sellout crowd at Hobey Baker Rink and a national television audience on ESPNU.
It was a back-and forth game that saw Princeton and Colgate trade the lead a few times. Princeton scored first, only to have Colgate gain leads of 2-1 and 3-2, before three straight Tiger goals gave Princeton a 5-3 third period lead. Colgate would add the final goal in the 5-4 game.
Lohry gave Princeton a 1-0 lead 1:25 into the contest when he scored from the off wing through a screen for his seventh goal of the season. The goal off the rush came with assists from Eric Meland and Matt Godlewski. Lohry and Meland were among three Tigers, along with Andrew Calof, to record multiple points in the win.
Princeton had the early lead but it was Colgate that would take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission thanks to a pair of power-play goals in the stanza. Kurtis Bartliff scored on a point shot at 10:52 and Francois Brisebois added a goal at 18:27 while Colgate skated with a two-man advantage. Bartliff and Brisebois each assisted on the other's goal, while Jeremy Price had assists on each goal and had three in the game.
Princeton drew even on the power play 4:29 into the second period when Mike Kramer netted his fifth of the year, sneaking a rebound past Colgate goaltender Zlex Evin with assists from Matt Arhontas and Calof as Arhontas' chance on the doorstep was stopped before Kramer put in the rebound.
Colgate answered at 12:20 when Nick Prockow scored from Kevin McNamara and Price, but Princeton would draw even before the period would end thanks to a power-play goal from Meland after a Taylor Fedun shot was blocked. Prior to the goal, Princeton skated with a man-advantage and Prockow was robbed by Princeton netminder Mike Condon on a 2 on 1. Play went the other way and Colgate took a second penalty, giving Princeton a two-man advantage and Meland converted for his fifth goal of the season.
Princeton, which outshot Colgate 33-11 through two periods jumped on Colgate early in the third and scored two goals 1:10 apart to take the game's first two-goal lead. At 4:27 Lohry picked a corner for his second goal of the game after Calof cleared the puck out of the defensive zone to him. Moments later, Brodie Zuk scored his first of the year, converting on the power play with assists from Derrick Pallis and Andrew Ammon.
Colgate would get back within one goal at 5:51 when Robbie Bourdon took a turned over puck and rang it off the post and in from 10 feet inside the blue line.
That was it for the scoring as Princeton held Colgate off over the final 14 minutes to claim the one-goal victory and salvage a weekend split after falling to Cornell on Friday night 2-1.
Condon finished with 17 saves for the win, while Evin made 39 saves in the Colgate net. Princeton outshot Colgate 44-21 in the win. Princeton was 3 for 7 with the extra man, while Colgate was 2 for 7.
The win sends Princeton into the exam break with an 11-6-1 overall record and a 7-4-1 mark in league games. Princeton enters the break having won six of eight with a 6-1-1 record in the span.
