Women's Lacrosse Announces 2012 Schedule

PRINCETON, N.J. (11/1/11) - The 2011 Ivy League Tournament Champion Princeton will face 15 opponents when the 2012 season gets underway in February.
The Tigers' schedule includes eight home games, with the home opener slated for Feb. 29 when Princeton hosts Rutgers at 7 p.m. Princeton will play eight non-conference opponents, including a home contest with the national runner-up Maryland on April 11.
For the first time in six years, Princeton will not open the season against Johns Hopkins, but against Villanova. The Wildcats host the Tigers in the first meeting between the two squads, on Feb. 25. Villanova will start anew with a Tiger as its head coach as Julie (Shaner) Young '01 was hired at the end of last season. Villanova was 5-11 last year and 1-7 in the BIG EAST.
Princeton looks to make it two in a row against in-state rival Rutgers in the home opener on Feb. 29. The Tigers own a 13-3-1 all-time record in the series and won 9-8 last year with an overtime goal by Jaci Gassaway. The Scarlet Knights went 9-7 last year and tied for fifth in the BIG EAST standings with a 3-5 mark.Three days later on March 3, Princeton hosts NCAA semifinalist Duke which posted a 15-5 record last year. The Blue Devils have won three straight in the series including a 19-12 win last year, but its the Tigers that have the edge in the series 8-7.
Princeton opens the Ivy League season on Saturday, March 10 at Brown. The Tigers are on a 21-game win streak over the Bears that dates back to 1992. Princeton is 30-3 all time against Brown and took a 17-5 game last season.
The Tigers return home one week later to host rival Virginia on March 17. The Cavaliers were 9-9 last year and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. Virginia is 15-14 in the series and took a 10-9 game last year, marking the 10th one-goal game between the two squads.
Princeton will play its next two games on the road, first stopping off at Columbia on Wednesday, March 21. The Tigers are undefeated against the Lions at 13-0 and won an 18-10 game last year - the second game the teams played - as the first was called due to a storm and replayed. The Lions were 1-6 in league play last year and had a 4-11 overall record.
Although the teams are meeting in the season opener, Princeton and Johns Hopkins will face off on Sunday, March 25. The Tigers have won the last five meetings, including a 9-8 game last year, and holds a 6-1 advantage in the series. Hopkins posted a 9-8 record last year and went 1-4 in the ALC.
Princeton returns home to host Cornell on Saturday, March 31. The Tigers won 15-10 last year in Ithaca to improve their record in the series to 30-3. Last season, the Big Red finished fifth in the league with a 3-4 mark and was 6-8 overall.
After taking a year off, Princeton and Temple resume the series on April 4 in Philadelphia. Temple won the last game, in 2010, but it's the Tigers that have had the upperhand with a 19-9 record in the series. The Owls were 5-2 in the Atlantic-10 and was 7-10 overall in 2011.
The Tigers will take on Yale on Saturday, April 7 in the first of back to back home games. Princeton has won the last four meetings with Yale, including a 9-3 game from 2011, and holds a 23-14-1 edge in the series. Yale was 3-12 overall last year and went 0-7 in the Ivy League.
Maryland comes to town on Wednesday, April 11. The teams faced each other twice last season with Maryland winning both games and ending Princeton's run in the NCAA Tournament. Maryland won 17-10 in April and 15-6 in the quarterfinals, both game on its home field. The Tigers will be looking for revenge and their first win since 2006. Maryland was 21-1 last year and lost in the national championship by one goal.
Princeton travels to Harvard three days later, April 14. After the Crimson won a 9-8 game during the regular season, the Tigers came back and topped them 12-10 in the Ivy League Championship at Penn. Princeton holds a 25-17 lead in the series. Harvard was 10-6 overall last year and tied for third with Princeton in the league standings with a 5-2 mark.
Princeton hosts its final two Ivy League opponents, Dartmouth and Penn.
Dartmouth and Princeton will face off on Saturday, April 21. The Big Green took a 15-10 game in Hanover last year and finished the year tied with Penn with a 6-1 conference record and 11-5 overall. Dartmouth lost to Harvard in the Ivy League semifinals and dropped a 10-7 game to Albany in an NCAA first round game.
Princeton looks for its third straight win over Penn. The Tigers beat the Quakers 11-7 during the regular season and beat the No. 1 seed in the Ivy League Tournament 10-8. Penn finished the year 11-6, falling to Duke in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Princeton holds a 20-17-3 edge in the all-time series.
The Tigers conclude the regular season at Penn State on Saturday, April 28. Princeton has won the last four meetings including a 19-10 game in Princeton in 2011. The Nittany Lions posted a 10-8 record last year and was 3-2 in the ALC.
The semifinals of the Ivy League Tournament will be on Friday, May 4 with the championship taking place on Sunday, May 6. All games will be held at the site of the regular season champion. The champion of the tournament will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The first round of the NCAA Tournament will be held on May 12-13 with the quarterfinals on May 19-20. The NCAA championship will be May 25 and 27 at Stony Brook University.
