Mills Named Most Outstanding, Tigers Finish Fourth at Ivy Meet
February 13, 2011 | Men's Fencing
The Tigers lost two narrow bouts Sunday as Harvard took the title for the first time since 2007. Princeton was the defending champion, last year having won its first title since 2001.
Harvard defeated Princeton head-to-head by a score of 17-10 in Saturday's last bout, but Princeton still held out hope for at least a shared title heading into Sunday. Though the Tigers opened the day with an 19-8 win over Columbia, a 14-13 loss to Yale followed by a 15-12 loss to Penn finished the Tigers at 2-3 for the weekend.
Harvard defeated Yale in the day's final match to finish at 5-0, with Yale second at 4-1, Penn third at 3-2, followed by Princeton, Brown (1-4) and Columbia (0-5).
Mills, a foilist, was Princeton's lone first-team All-Ivy League selection, while saberist John Stogin and epeeist Jonathan Yergler were second-teamers.
Mills led all Ivy foilists with a 13-2 record, matched only by Harvard saberist Thomas Kolasa and Yale epeeist Cornelius Sanders. Stogin was Princeton's top saberist, turning in a 9-6 record, while Yergler was the top epeeist among Tigers at 9-5.
Following the Philadelphia Invitational at Temple, the Princeton men will compete in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic/South Regional at Drew University on March 12.
