PRINCETON (2/24/11) - The Princeton women's lacrosse opens the 2011 season hosting Johns Hopkins on Saturday, Feb. 26 at 1 p.m., at Princeton Stadium.
The game will be webstreamed on GoPrincetonTigers.tv for subscribers. Fans can also listen to the game on the internet with Princeton's Ed Benkin calling the action and follow along with live stats.
The Tigers return 16 of 21 letterwinners from last season, and eight of 11 starters. Like last year the 2011 team is young, with more than half the team underclassmen with five seniors, two of which are three or four year starters. The difference between last year and this year is experience.
Seventy-five percent of Princeton's point production returns, including leading scorer and senior All-America Lizzy Drumm. Drumm had a team-high 32 goals and nine assists for 41 points. Junior Barb Previ had a breakout year last year finishing third on the team in scoring with 16 goals and 12 assists for 28 points. The next four scorers beneath Previ, Cassie Pyle, Charlotte Davis, Maisie Devine and Caroline Rehfuss all return. Defensively, the Tigers bring back All-America goalie Erin Tochihara and All-America defender Lindsey deButts. deButts led the team in ground balls, caused turnovers and draw controls in 2010. Tochihara finished the 2009 season ranked sixth in goals against average and fourth in save percentage and should have a more experienced defense in front of her this year. The squad went 6-10 last season and made reached the first Ivy League Tournament finishing fourth in the standings with a 4-3 mark.
Princeton leads the all-time series with Johns Hopkins, 5-1. The two teams only began playing each other in 2005 and since that time Princeton has opened each season with the Blue Jays. Last year the Tigers recorded a 10-9 overtime victory at Homewood Field on Feb. 27, to push their win streak in the series to four.
Johns Hopkins opened its season on Feb. 19 and is 2-0 entering today's game. The Blue Jays defeated George Mason 19-9 in the home opener and most recently took down Mt. St. Mary's 17-4 this past Wednesday at Homewood Field. The team is outscoring its opponents 36-13 and average 16 more shots per game.
Junior attackers Candace Rossi and Colleen McCaffrey lead the team in scoring with nine points apiece with Rossi scoring a team-high seven goals, five of which came against the Mount. She also leads the team in caused turnovers with five. McCaffrey has a team-leading four assists and seven draw controls. Rookie Taylor D'Amore has eight points after a five-goal game against George Mason. Junior attacker Rachel Ballatori has six points and senior attacker Brooke Foussadier adds four. Sophomore goalie Cosette Larash has played all 120 minutes and has made 13 saves on 26 shots for a .500 save percentage and a 6.50 goals against average. She also has a team-high six ground balls with junior defender Alyssa Kildare following with five.
