Men's Hockey Blanked by #5 Union in Regular-Season Finale
February 26, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (2/26/11) - Fifth-ranked Union scored three first period goals to build an early lead in a 5-0 shutout of the Princeton men's hockey team on Saturday night at Messa Rink in the team's regular season finale. Princeton finished in a tie for fourth in the ECAC standings and will be the six seed for the upcoming playoffs.
Union clinched the ECAC regular season championship with the win and got on the board at 5:14 with its first of three power-play goals as Mat Bodie found Daniel Carr along the goal line for the go-ahead goal. Luke Cain made it 2-0 for Union five minutes later with another power-play goal as he deflected a point shot. Union made it 3-0 in the final minute of the period as Carr netted his second of the game after a turnover in the Princeton zone.
After being outshot 11-4 in the opening period, Princeton outshot Union 31-17 over the final 40 minutes but couldn't crack Union goaltender Keith Kinkaid. The Dutchmen would add a power-play goal midway through the third from Stephane Boileau and a shorthanded empty-net goal from John Simpson.
Princeton outshot Union 35-28 in the game. Kinkaid stopped all 35 shots for the shutout while Mike Condon made 23 saves in the loss.
Princeton is now 16-11-2 entering the postseason. Princeton finished the regular season tied for fourth in the final league standings with Cornell and Rensselaer, but Princeton loses the tiebreakers to each and winds up as the league's sixth seed.
Princeton will now host an ECAC first-round playoff series next weekend at Hobey Baker Rink against 11th-seeded St. Lawrence. Princeton swept both regular season meetings with the Saints. Tickets for the playoff series will be available beginning on Tuesday morning.
The other first round series are (9) Brown at (8) Quinnipiac, (10) Harvard at (7) Clarkson and (12) Colgate at (5) Rensselaer.
