Women's Swimming Looks For Perfect Ivy Finish Friday At Columbia
February 03, 2011 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Coming off a perfect performance at the 2011 H-Y-P meet, when Princeton swept all 17 events against both Harvard and Yale, the Tiger women's swimming and diving team will be looking to complete its fourth straight undefeated regular season when it heads to Columbia's Uris Pool Friday at 6 p.m.
Princeton, 6-0 on the season, has won 37 straight dual meets since a 2006 loss at Big-10 power Michigan. Since then, head coach Susan Teeter's crew has won 34 straight Ivy League matchups, including a 141-94 home win over Columbia last season. Few wins were as impressive as last weekend's 207-93 victory over a Harvard program that had come into the weekend with several impressive times throughout the season.
The two-day meet belonged to Princeton from the start and included seven Yale pool records and a trio of Princeton records, including two from Megan Waters (100 free, 100 fly), who would go on to be named the Princeton Athlete of the Week, presented by Coach USA. Waters won the 100 free in 49.67 and the 100 fly in 53.67; those times broke records from two of Princeton's most dominant swimmers of the last decade, Stephanie Hsiao and Alicia Aemisegger.
Freshman Andrea Kropp also set a Princeton record in the 200 breast (2:11.52) and now owns both breast records for Princeton. Kropp and classmate Lisa Boyce have become a strong 1-2 punch for the Class of 2014, but classmates Rebecca Lewinson, Maureen McCotter and Rachel Zambrowicz have also been event winners over the last two weeks.
Columbia comes into the weekend with a 4-3 record and has won its last three meets, including Ivy League wins over Brown and Cornell. Sophomore Katie Melli has Top 10 Ivy League times in both the 200 and 400 IM, while both junior Stephanie Foster and freshman Kathleen Furr swept the diving events last weekend against Brown. Columbia is led by head coach Diana Caskey, a former All-America swimmer for Princeton who graduated in 1985.
