Women's Lacrosse Heads to Rutgers for Midweek Game

PRINCETON (3/1/11) - Coming off a one-goal win in the home opener, the Princeton women's lacrosse team will make the short trip up Route 1 to battle Rutgers on Wednesday, March 2 at 7 p.m.
Princeton is looking to avenge a 12-11 loss to Rutgers from a year ago that snapped the Tigers' six-game streak in the series. Princeton leads the all-time series with Rutgers 12-2-1. The teams first met in 1975 when Rutgers' women's college was Douglass.
Princeton is 1-0 on the season after defeating Johns Hopkins 9-8 in the home opener on Saturday, Feb. 26. Junior Barb Previ and sophomore Charlotte Davis each had three-point games with two goals and an assist each. Sophomore Jaci Gassaway scored twice, including the game-winning goal with 3:40 to play. Junior Cassie Pyle added two goals and sophomore Caroline Rehfuss earned two assists. Senior goalie Erin Tochihara was named the Ivy League Defensive Player of the Week after making 12 saves in the win over JHU. She leads the team in ground balls, while defender Allison Behringer is the team leader in caused turnovers.
Rutgers enters its home opener with a 2-0 record. The Scarlet Knights defeated Temple 11-10 and Cornell 11-7. The team has scored 22 goals on 36 shots on goal and takes 6.5 fewer shots per game than its opponents. Leading Rutgers is scoring is senior midfielder Marlena Welsh. The BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week totaled seven points in two games last week. Sophomore Stephanie Anderson and junior Ali Steinber have five points apiece, with Steinber leading the team in assists with three and draw controls with six. Sophomore Lily Kalata has played every minute in goal ans has made 20 saves on 37 shots for an 8.50 goals against average and a .541 save percentage. Kalata has a team-high eight ground balls while senior defender Mary Moran and Steinber have four each. Moran also leads the team in caused turnovers with two.
