Megan Waters Looks To Cap Career With All-America Honors At NCAAs
March 15, 2011 | Women's Swimming and Diving
Senior Megan Waters, who earned Ivy League Championships Swimmer of the Meet in leading Princeton to the 2011 Ivy League title, will look to put an exclamation point on her brilliant career with All-America honors at the 2011 NCAA Championships, held Thursday-Saturday at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas.
Waters will compete in three individual events, and she set Princeton records in all three during the Ivy League Championship meet. She will open competition Thursday in the 50 free, which she qualified for with the 22nd-best time of 22.36.
To earn All-America honors, a swimmer needs to post one of the top 16 times during the preliminary swims. The top eight will compete in the championship final and clinch first-team All-America honors, while swimmers nine through 16 will compete in the 'B' final and earn All-America honorable mention.
Thus, Waters will need to move up at least six spots in the 50 to earn All-America honors. Of course, the difference between the 16th-best time of Texas A&M's Maria Sommer and Waters' time is only .07 of a second, so the move is possible.
On Friday, Waters will compete in the 100 fly, which is the only event this weekend where she is outside the Top 25. Waters' seed time is 53.38, which ranks 41st of 55 competitors.
Her best shot at All-America honors could come Saturday, when she competes in the 100 free. A two-time Ivy League champion in this event, Waters' seed time of 48.66 is 15th best in the country. She is .38 of a second off the time of Stanford's Andrea Murez, who is the final member of the national Top 8.
"I'm excited for Megan to culminate her career at the NCAA Championships this week," head coach Susan Teeter said. "She has been such a big part of three Ivy League titles for Princeton and was the best swimmer in our league this season. She earned this opportunity and I think we could see something special from her this weekend as she competes for All-America honors."
