Women's Lax Heads South, Looks For Upset At No. 9 James Madison
March 15, 2011 | Women's Lacrosse
A challenging road trip for the 15th-ranked Princeton women's lacrosse team will begin Wednesday night when the Tigers take on the undefeated and ninth-ranked Dukes of James Madison.
Princeton, which will also take on No. 8 Virginia this weekend, will be looking to do more than just continue the strong start to its 2011 season. The Tigers will be seeking a bit of revenge after a heartbreaking double-overtime loss to James Madison last season at Princeton Stadium; Kim Griffin's final goal capped a rally for the Dukes, who were unseeded at the time of their 13-12 victory.
Plenty has changed this season, as James Madison has opened the season with five consecutive victories, including one over No. 20 Virginia Tech and another over Yale. The Dukes have scored at least 11 goals in four of their five games and are led by both Mary Kate Lomady and Casey Ancarrow, who have each scored 12 goals this season. The Dukes have been particularly strong early, outscoring its opponents 35-18 in the first half.
Princeton, which is coming off an impressive 17-5 victory over Brown last weekend, is 3-1 on the season, with its lone loss coming at No. 3 Brown. The Tigers have already shown an ability to pull out close wins; they are 2-0 in one-goal games, including a 9-8 overtime win at Rutgers on a goal from Jaci Gassaway. It's No. 15 national ranking is Princeton's highest during the young season, though it could make a big leap with one or two victories in the coming days.
Gassaway leads the team with 13 points, while veteran Lizzy Drumm has scored a team-best 11 goals. Drumm had six goals on 10 shots in Princeton's overtime loss to James Madison last season.
