Waters Opens NCAA Championships With Top 20 Finish In 50 Free
March 17, 2011 | Women's Swimming and Diving
If Thursday is any indication, this will be a terrific final competitive weekend for Princeton senior Megan Waters. The 2011 Ivy League Swimmer of the Meet improved on her seed and earned her first career NCAA Top 20 finish during the 50 free preliminaries during Thursday's first session of the NCAA Championships, held in Austin, Texas.
Waters matched her lifetime best swim of 22.36 to finish in a three-way tie for 19th, and she missed All-America Honorable Mention by only .03 of a second; three swimmers shared 16th place with a time of 22.33. While missing out on All-America honors might have been a slight disappointment, Waters knows her best event, the 100 free, is still to come.
Waters, whose time of 22.36 is a Princeton record, will return to the pool Friday to compete in the 100 fly; that was one of three individual events Waters won during Princeton's 2011 Ivy League Championship win. Waters was a perfect 7-for-7 in Ivy finals; she won the 50 free, 100 free and 100 fly, and she was part of winning 200 and 400 free relays and 200 and 400 medley relays.
Arizona's Margo Geer will go into Thursday night's championship final as the top seed with a preliminary-best swim of 21.79.
