Women's Lacrosse Loses One-Goal Game at Virginia, 10-9

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (3/19/11) - Princeton and Virginia have played each other tightly in women's lacrosse since the first meeting in 1989 and today was no different. The Cavaliers took a 10-9 game at Klockner Stadium, marking the 13th one-goal game in series history.
Shots were nearly even with No. 8 Virginia taking a slim 23-22 edge over No. 15 Princeton. The Cavaliers won the ground ball battle 21-16 and had 13 draws to the Tigers' eight.
Junior Barb Previ had a hat trick and freshman Sarah Lloyd had two goals for the Tigers. Sophomore Jaci Gassaway earned two assists while senior Maisie Devine and sophomore Sam Ellis had a goal and an assist each.
Julie Gardner paced the Virginia offense with four points on three goals and one assist. Charlie Finnigan had a hat trick while Josie Owen and Mady Keeshan both had two-point games. In goal Kim Kolarik made six saves.
The game got started with both teams scoring a goal within a minute of each other as the score stood 2-2 just about 10 minutes into the game. Lloyd scored her first collegiate goal and Previ had her first of three on the afternoon.
Virginia scored four unanswered over the next 11 minutes to take a 6-2 lead with 7:39 to play.
Princeton responded with a three-goal run to close out the half down by one, 6-5. Devine ended the scoring drought for the Tigers with a tally from Gassaway at 5:10. Sophomore Caroline Rehfuss converted on a free-position attempt and 17 seconds later Ellis put away a Gassaway pass after causing a turnover.
Gardner would score her first of three second-half goals to open the second half, but Previ answered back 18 seconds later.
Gardner and Finnigan would each score to put Virginia ahead by three, 9-6 before Lloyd got her second of the afternoon at the 20-minutes mark on a pass from Ellis.
After Gardner's tally at 16:28, the Cavaliers would be held scoreless for the remainder of the game.
Senior defender Caroline Markowitz recorded her first goal of the season at 12:55 to make it 10-8.
After a yellow card was assessed to Virginia, Previ converted on the free-position shot to make it a one-goal game, 10-9, with 3:13 on the clock, but the Tigers could not get the equalizer.
Princeton falls to 3-3 on the season while Virginia moves to 5-3.
The Tigers return home to face Columbia on Wednesday, March 23 at 7 p.m.
