Julie Cerullo Falls To Reigning Champion In CSA Semifinal
March 05, 2011 | Men's Squash, Women's Squash
9 p.m. update:
Sophomore Todd Harrity swept Trinity's Vikram Malhotra 11-9, 11-5, 11-8 to advance to Sunday's national championship match. He will take on Cornell's Nick Sachvie, who topped Trinity's Andres Vargas in three games. Harrity defeated Sachvie 3-1 in the regular season; that November match was the last time Harrity was extended to a fourth game, so the final against the talented Sachvie should be a good one.
Princeton women's No. 1 Julie Cerullo fell 3-0 to reigning national champion Laura Gemmell of Harvard. Cerullo made Gemmell work in each game, but she fell 11-7, 11-7, 11-8.
5:30 p.m. update:
With two rounds remaining in both the men's and women's individual national championships, the Princeton dreams of a sophomore sweep stayed alive.
Sophomore Todd Harrity advanced to his second straight national semifinal with a 3-0 win over Rochester No. 1 Benjamin Fischer. Continuing his streak of highly efficient 3-0 wins, Harrity took games of 11-8, 11-6 and 11-5 to reach a semifinal match against Trinity No. 1 Vikram Malhotra, a 3-1 winner over teammate Christopher Binnie in the quarterfinal.
Harrity defeated Malhotra 3-0 during the regular season, and would advance to his second straight national final with his 19th victory of the season. Should he win, he will face either third-seeded Nicholas Sachvie of Cornell or 11th-seeded Andres Vargas of Trinity. Harrity defeated Sachvie 3-1 on Nov. 21; the 11-6 first-game win for Sachvie was the last individual game Harrity has lost this season, a span of 51 straight games. Harrity and Vargas have not met this season.
Fellow No. 1 player Julie Cerullo came into the women's draw as the fourth seed, but she enters the semifinals as the second-highest seeded player remaining. Unfortunately, she'll face the top seed in the semifinal, as reigning champion Laura Gemmell won a 3-0 quarterfinal match.
Cerullo fought hard for a berth in the semifinal, as she topped Penn's Rachael Goh 3-0 in the quarterfinal. Goh was coming off a win over fifth-seeded Pamela Hathway of Trinity, and she battled Cerullo well past the 11-point mark of the first game. Cerullo finally closed the opening game with a 20-18 win, and she followed that up with wins of 11-4 and 11-7.
If Cerullo can pull the upset of Gemmell, she will face either 11th-seeded Nirasha Gurgue of Harvard or seventh-seeded Millie Tomlinson of Yale. Gurgue knocked off third-seeded Logan Greer of Yale 3-2, while Tomlinson eliminated second-seeded Catalina Pelaez of Trinity in three games.
Junior Kelly Shannon remains in the men's 'A' second-round consolation draw, and he did so with a win over teammate and close friend David Letourneau. Shannon scored a 3-0 win, including a 16-14 effort in the middle game, and will now face Trinity's Parth Sharma, the tournament's sixth seed.
In the second-round consolation draw, tenth-seeded Jackie Moss scored a 3-1 win over Yale No. 4 Kimberley Hay to advance to the semifinal.
The Princeton women have four players still alive in the Holleran Cup draw for players ranked 33-64, and each are in different quarterfinal draws. Sophomore Casey Cortes could face freshman Alex Sawin in one semifinal, while junior Katie Giovinazzo could face senior Nikki Sequeira in the other semifinal.
