Women's Lacrosse Heads to Dartmouth for Pivotal Ivy Matchup

PRINCETON, N.J. (4/22/11) – The Princeton women's lacrosse team will try to keep its Ivy League title hopes alive when it travels to Dartmouth on Saturday, April 23 for a noon game.
The game will be webstreamed on DartmouthSports.com, for a fee of $6.95. Fans can also follow the live stats free of charge.
Princeton is in second place in the Ivy League along with Dartmouth and Harvard with matching 4-1 records. Penn is 5-1 and in first place. All four teams have secured places in the Ivy League Tournament, which seeds are yet to be determined.Princeton is coming off of an 11-7 upset of No. 8 Penn on Wednesday at Franklin Field. The Tigers snapped Penn's 34-game Ivy League win streak, dating back to 2006. Its last loss coincidently was to Princeton on April 19, 2006 an 8-7 decision.
It was a balanced attack with five multiple-point scorers led by Cassie Pyle, and the unstoppable force of Erin Tochihara in goal that gave Princeton it's first win over a top-10 team this season.
The Tigers are 7-5 on the season. Senior Lizzy Drumm and sophomore Jaci Gassaway are tied atop the scoring column with 30 points. Drumm has a team-high 28 goals and two helpers while Gassaway is the team's assist leader with 11 and adds 19 goals. Drumm is also the team leader in draw controls winning 26. Pyle contributes 26 points and is second on the team in goals, while sophomore Charlotte Davis has 20 points. Sophomore Sam Ellis, junior Barb Previ and freshman Sarah Lloyd are also in double digits in scoring. Tochihara has made 106 saves on 223 shots on goal for a 9.67 goals against average and a .475 save percentage. Defensively, sophomore Caroline Rehfuss and junior Lindsey deButts lead the team in caused turnovers.
Princeton holds a 21-16 edge in the all-time series with Dartmouth, which began in 1980. The Tigers have won the last two meetings including an 11-10 overtime win at Princeton Stadium in the regular season finale last year that gave the Tigers a spot in the Ivy League Tournament.
Dartmouth boasts an 8-3 record is ranked No. 14, one spot above Princeton in the national poll. The Big Green's last loss was 10-9 at Penn last Saturday, which snapped a five-game winning streak and sports a 5-0 record at home this season.
Senior Kat Collins leads the team in scoring with 25 goals and 10 assists for 35 points. Senior Greta Meyer has 21 goals and seven helpers for 28 points. Junior Sarah Plumb adds 26 points and classmate Kirsten Goldberg contributes 21. Three more players are in double digits in scoring. Collins, Plumb and sophomore Courtney Bennett each have a team-best 18 draw controls, while senior defender Shannie MacKenzie, junior middie Hilary Smith and Plumb are the team leaders in caused turnovers and have helped Dartmouth to a league best 9.64 caused turnovers per game. Freshman Kristen Giovanniello has played every minute in goal and has made 102 saves and allowed 89 goals for a .534 save percentage and an 8.09 GAA. She ranks first in the league in save percentage and second in GAA.
Last Time We Met
PRINCETON, N.J. (4/25/10) - Freshman Caroline Rehfuss scored the game-winning goal in overtime and junior Erin Tochihara made 14 saves to give the Princeton women's lacrosse team an 11-10 win over No. 7 Dartmouth on Sunday, April 25 at Princeton Stadium.
The Tigers rallied from a 7-3 deficit to come back and win the game that decided their postseason fate earning a berth in the Ivy League Tournament.
Rehfuss led Princeton in scoring with a career-best four goals. Sophomore Barb Previ tallied three goals and added an assist. Junior Lizzy Drumm scored twice and sophomore Cassie Pyle and freshman Jenna Davis had one goal and assist apiece.
Leading the Big Green was Greta Meyer with a four-point game, scoring three goals and adding a helper. Sarah Parks had one goal and two assists. Erin Massimi, Kirsten Goldberg and Hilary Smith all contributed two points.
The teams opened the game trading goals with Meyer scoring for Dartmouth and Rehfuss answering back. Parks connected with Sarah Plumb at 23:30 to give the Big Green the lead it wouldn't give up until the final minutes of the second half. Smith added a goal to put Dartmouth up 3-1 before Lizzy Drumm made it a one-point game. An eight-meter goal by Smith would send the Big Green on a three-goal run as Massimi tallied the next two goals to make it 6-2.
Previ ended the run when she picked up a loose ball behind the cage and came around the left side to score at 8:13. Princeton wouldn't go away outshooting Dartmouth 6-2 in that last eight minutes but it was Dartmouth that would get the final goal of the half by Meyer to take a 7-3 lead into the locker room.
Princeton came out of the locker room and quickly scored two goals, the first by Rehfuss with an assist to Pyle, the second was a free-position goal by Pyle.
Dartmouth would sandwich a Drumm goal with two of their own to lead 9-6 with 13:22 left on the clock.
Princeton would tally three unanswered goals, sparked by a Rehfuss goal at 12:27. Freshman Charlotte Davis and Previ followed up to tie the game, 9-9, at 6:40.
Goldberg would score for Dartmouth with 2:26 left but Previ knotted the game at 10-10 with 50 second to play in regulation.
With 50 seconds left, Tochihara made two saves, one on an eight-meter attempt and another with just two seconds to play to force the overtime.
Dartmouth won the opening draw and looked like it had won the game 1:09 into the extra session but a goal by Parks was called off due to an illegal stick.
Tochihara came up with three huge saves for the Tigers, two by Meyer and one on an eight-meter from Goldberg.
After a yellow card was called on Dartmouth, Princeton was awarded a free-position attempt. The shot by Rehfuss went wide but Charlotte Davis was at the endline to maintain possession. Davis had the ball behind the net and with three second left passed it to Rehfuss who was on the doorstep surrounded by two defenders but threw the ball towards the net and it slipped by goalie Julie Wadland. Wadland finished the game with seven saves.
Princeton had a 32-31 advantage in shots and won 14 draw controls to Dartmouth's 11. The Big Green won the ground ball battle, 27-25.
