The Wood-Hammond Cup: Penn and Georgetown

#1 Men's Lights Sweep Penn, Georgetown For Wood-Hammond Trophy
April 23, 2011 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
The Tiger first varsity has spent all season knowing it world gets its opponent's best shot, and that was the case again Saturday morning. The Quakers pushed Princeton, but the Tigers kept their perfect season alive by winning in 5:43.5, while Penn took second in 5:48.4. Georgetown rounded out the field in 5:51.6.
"The first varsity had a one length lead 500 meters into the race and was able to control it from there," head coach Marty Crotty said. "Penn and Georgetown stayed close behind and had a great battle for second."
That was one of four races Princeton won during the rainy Saturday morning session. The Princeton 2V was impressive in a comfortable victory in its heat; the Tigers won in 5:55.1, more than 14 seconds faster than Penn's second-place time of 6:09.7. The Princeton 3V also pulled out an open water win, topping Penn in 6:10.4.
"The 2V once again showed great form in an important tune-up race," Crotty said. "Next week's 2V will be a great challenge, as both Harvard and Yale have tough 2Vs."
The lightweight novice eight bounced back from its first loss of the season to hold off Penn in another close race. Princeton won in 5:54.0, while the Quakers took second in 5:58.4.
"The freshmen once again had a true test, but they prevailed this time," Crotty said. "They were dead level with Penn at the 1000 meter mark, but made a strong move that got them ahead. It was a good win."
Princeton will close its season with the biggest regatta of the lightweight men's season; the top-ranked Tigers will take on both No. 2 Harvard and No. 3 Yale for the Vogel and Goldthwait Cups next weekend on the Charles River. Harvard took both cups in this regatta last season and snapped a long Princeton 1V win streak, but the Tigers bounced back to top the Crimson in both the EARC and IRA national grand finals.
The winner of next weekend's race is likely to be the top seed for the EARC Championships, held May 15 in Worcester, Mass.
