PRINCETON, N.J. (4/28/11) – The Princeton women's lacrosse team will play its final home game of the 2011 season when it hosts Penn State on Saturday, April 30 at 1 p.m. Prior to the game Princeton will honor its Class of 2011: Maisie Devine, Lizzy Drumm, Caroline Markowitz, Kaitlyn Mauritz and Erin Tochihara. It will also be Alumnae Day at Princeton Stadium.
The game will be webstreamed on GoPrincetonTigers.tv. Fans can also listen to the live play-by-play and follow live stats free of charge.
Princeton owns an 8-6 overall record after taking down Columbia 18-10 on Wednesday night here at Princeton Stadium. Senior Lizzy Drumm sits atop the scoring column, scoring 22% of the team's goals with 34 goals while adding three assists. She also leads the team in draw controls. The Ivy League Offensive Player of the Week Cassie Pyle is coming off of a seven-point game against Columbia and has 26 goals and 10 assists. Sophomore Jaci Gassaway also has 10 assists to go along with 23 goals, and classmate Charlotte Davis has 23 points. Junior defender Lindsey deButts leads the team in caused turnovers and ground balls. Senior Erin Tochihara has started in every game in goal and has made 124 saves for a .466 save percentage and a 10.10 goals against average.
Princeton and Penn State renew its rivalry after taking one year off. The Tigers lead the all-time series with Penn State, which began in 1982, by an 18-12 margin. The Tigers have won three of the last five meetings, including a 9-7 victory in the last meeting in 2009.
Penn State is 9-6 overall and has won its last three games, most recently defeating Johns Hopkins, 10-7. All six of its losses came to teams ranked in the top 11. The team averages 10.67 goals per game, while holding teams to 8.87. Senior Jen Steadman leads the team in scoring with 30 goals and 11 assists for 41 points. Senior Laura Lesnick has 25 goals and five assists and freshman Mackenzie Cyr has a team-high 19 assists and nine goals for 28 points. Senior Maggie Dunbar and junior Theresa Zichelli are the team leaders in draw controls and caused turnovers. Junior Dana Cahill has started every game in goal and has made 122 saves while allowing 128 goals for a .488 save percentage and an 8.95 goals against average.
Last Time We Met (March 14, 2009)
Down by one, Kristin Morrison '10 sparked a three-goal run and Sarah Steele '09 had a hat trick to lead No. 7 Princeton to a 9-7 win over No. 15 Penn State at Class of 1952 Stadium.
PSU took the early lead at 27:46 but Princeton responded scoring two in 1:14 to take the 2-1 lead. The Nittany Lions evened it up and took a 3-2 lead on a free position attempt 28 seconds later. Steele got her own rebound and evened the score at 3-3 at the end of the half.
The Tigers started the second half scoring two goals to make it 5-3. Steele tallied her second goal of the game and Schwab deked her defender and found the back of the net.
Marisa Lozano cut the lead back to one when she scored on the doorstep at 22:53, but Holly McGarvie '09 answered to give Princeton a 6-4 lead at 18:55.
Trailing 6-4 PSU scored three unanswered goals to take its first lead of the second half.
Morrison quieted the Nittany Lions bench at 10:26 with the game-tying score. Christine Casaceli '09 grabbed her own rebound for the eventual game-winning goal at 8:34. Steele sealed the win for the Tigers at 4:34.
Princeton held a 30-24 advantage in shots and a 36-26 edge in ground balls, while draw controls were even at nine apiece.
