Fencer Kelley Places 18th at Junior World Championship in Jordan
April 03, 2011 | Men's Fencing
Princeton sophomore epeeist Edward Kelley placed 18th of 124 competitors representing 62 countries at the Junior World Championship fencing event in Jordan on April 2.
Kelley won all six of his qualifying bouts against competitors from six countries while never allowing a score closer than 5-3 including one shutout. That earned Kelley the No. 2 seed in the seven-round elimination section of the competition, getting Kelley a bye to the Round of 64. There, the Tiger sophomore defeated 66th-seeded Argentinian foe Mariano Flores Gonzalez 15-6. In the Round of 32, Kelley was upended 15-11 by his Egyptian opponent, Alaa El Din Fayz. Despite his No. 31 seed, El Din Fayz went on to win three more bouts after defeating Kelley, finishing second in the competition after a 15-13 decision in the final against Briton Philip Marsh.
Kelley was one of just three fencers to earn the right to represent the U.S. in the junior epee competition and took the highest finish of the trio. Notre Dame sophomore James Kaull, who took 24th, and Harvard freshman Michael Raynis, who took 43rd, were the others.
That trio will continue as part of a four-man group to represent the U.S. in the international event's team epee competition on April 5.
