Men's Lights Place Fourth At EARCs; Second Varsity Claims Silver

Princeton's two-year run as EARC and Ivy League champion ended Sunday when Harvard won a tough three-team battle with Dartmouth and Yale to win the 2011 league title in 5:45.36. Dartmouth took second in 5:46.85, while Yale finished third in 5:46.96.
Princeton tried several charges to get back into the medal hunt, but each time the charge was answered, and the Tigers placed fourth in 5:49.91, nearly two seconds faster than fifth-place Cornell.
Princeton did pick up one medal Sunday, and it came in the 2V grand final. The second varsity went 7-1 during its regular season, with its only loss coming during the final regatta against Harvard. Those two boats would tangle again for the 2V Eastern gold, and Harvard once again had the final answers.
The Crimson won the title in 6:00.63, while Princeton placed second in 6:03.40. The Tigers actually found a tough battle for the silver medal against the Cornell Big Red, but the Tigers had just enough late to clinch second. Princeton finished in 6:03.40, while the Red took third in 6:03.46.
The freshmen lightweight eight, which had gone 7-2 during a strong regular season, was edged out in a tight three-team race for the final two spots on the medal stand. Yale took control of the race from the start and was never seriously pushed in winning the gold in 6:06.85, but Columbia, Cornell and Princeton were left to compete for the final two spots.
Columbia had the strong late push to grab second in 6:12.64, while Cornell took third in 6:13.86. Princeton, whose only two losses on the season had come against Yale and Cornell, finished fourth in 6:14.39.
The third varsity lightweight was in a seven-boat grand final and placed fifth in 6:15.73. Yale won the race in 6:02.54, while both Navy and Harvard rounded out the medal stand.
