Powe Dealt to Minnesota; Princeton Pro Hockey Update
June 28, 2011 | Men's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON (6/28/11) - On the eve of the National Hockey League's free agent signing period, former Princeton men's hockey player Darroll Powe was traded to the Minnesota Wild on Monday afternoon. Powe was one of five Princetonians to play in the NHL last season.
The free agent signing period begins on July 1 and Powe is a restricted free agent, meaning that Minnesota could receive compensation if he signs elsewhere. (Click here for a full explanation of what being a restricted free agent means.) Powe has spent the last three seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers and became an integral part of the their penalty killing unit. Powe increased his point totals in each of his three seasons with Philly.
The only other free agent among the eight Princetonians that either played in the NHL last season or under NHL contract is Jeff Halpern. An 11-year NHL veteran, Halpern has played for five teams and spent the 2010-11 season with the Montreal Canadiens. During the season he collected his highest goal total since the 2005-06 season and point total since the 2007-08 campaign. Halpern is an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team.
George Parros, Mike Moore and Kevin Westgarth all appeared in the NHL last season and all enter the final year of their contracts this upcoming season. All three are due to become unrestricted free agents next summer.
Three other Tigers are currently signed on NHL contracts but have yet to make their NHL debuts. Cam MacIntyre is signed through next season with the Sharks while Taylor Fedun, who graduated from Princeton this spring, is signed through the 2012-13 season with Edmonton. Finally Kyle Hagel signed an entry-level one-year deal earlier this spring with the St. Louis Blues after playing the in the AHL and ECHL for the past three seasons. All three will be restricted free agents at the completion of their current contracts.
