Claire Pinciaro made nine saves for the Princeton women's soccer team Friday night in Williamsburg, Va., but host William & Mary used goals in the 65th and 73rd minutes to take a 2-0 win.
The loss drops Princeton to 1-4 on the new season, with all five games coming against teams that had two-week head-starts to the regular season on the Tigers. Princeton will have another of those games Sunday when it opens Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium for the home schedule against La Salle at 1 p.m.
William & Mary, which improves to 5-1-2 on the season, outshot Princeton 19-10 overall and 11-3 on goal in completing the first shutout against Princeton this season. Juniors Jen Hoy and Caitlin Blosser and freshman Melissa Downey, a Virginia native, each had two shots for Princeton, whose coach Julie Shackford returned to her alma mater for the third time in her 17 seasons leading the team. The schedule will get no easier for the Tigers as La Salle (4-0-1) will come to Princeton unscored upon in its five contests since opening the season Aug. 21.
