La Salle Scores Late to Defeat Women's Soccer 1-0
September 18, 2011 | Women's Soccer
An 83rd-minute goal from La Salle's Kelsey Haycook was the game's first and, as it turned out, only goal as the Explorers defeated the Princeton women's soccer team 1-0 Sunday afternoon on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Late goals have given the Tigers trouble of late, as Princeton has now entered four of its five defeats tied at the half. Last time out against William & Mary, the Tribe scored both of their goals in the final 30 minutes to win 2-0, while two games prior, Seton Hall used a 108th-minute goal to win 2-1 in double overtime. Princeton was tied 1-1 at the half in the season opener at Long Beach State before falling 3-1.
Against La Salle, Princeton held the advantage in shots 12-5, but the Explorers got the one that counted off a set piece when Haycook controlled a loose ball after it was served into the box, putting it past Princeton goalkeeper Claire Pinciaro for the game's only goal.
"I think it's similar to some of the games we've been in where we have controlled a lot of the tempo and a lot of the ball, but haven't been opportunistic enough and have been punished for the one or two mistakes we've made in the game and it's unfortunate," Princeton coach Julie Shackford said.
La Salle held onto its season-long streak of being unscored upon, with keeper Melissa Sanger making four saves and surviving six corner kicks to three for the Explorers.
"While we do have a lot here, our challenge obviously will be to be a little bit more aggressive in the final third of the field. I thought in the last 15 or 20 minutes, we started to really move their defense and create chances, get their keeper off their line, but in some ways it was a little bit too late," Shackford said.
The game was Princeton's next-to-last contest before Saturday's Ivy League opener against Yale at Roberts Stadium. The final tune-up will come Wednesday when Lafayette visits for a 7 p.m. start.
"I think we're getting sharper," Shackford said. "We want them to remain optimistic because it is a good group. We're just finding the right combinations and the right mindset. We obviously can't get tied up in our results and have to move forward."
The La Salle game was televised tape-delay on Verizon FiOS1 Sports and will air Sept. 22 at 7:30 p.m. and Sept. 24 at 9:30 p.m. The Lafayette, Cornell and Columbia games will also be televised to tape by FiOS.
