Maryland Tops Field Hockey Team 6-2 on Tuesday

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (9/27/11) - Amanda Bird and Allison Evans scored goals for the Princeton field hockey team in a 6-2 loss at third-ranked Maryland on Tuesday night.
The Tigers fell behind early in the game when Megan Frazer scored in the fourth minute on the deflection of Ali McEvoy's shot following Maryland's first penalty corner of the game. The Terps would convert seven minutes later on their next penalty corner to make the score 2-0. Jemma Buckley scored the goal on a direct corner to give her team a two-goal lead before Princeton would register a shot.
Maryland would add two more goals in the opening half to lead 4-0 at the break. Katie Gerzabeck scored in the 17th minute and Buckley netted her second goal off the rebound of a shot that hit the post in the 27th minute.
Princeton got on the scoreboard early in the second half when Bird scored her third goal of the season on a direct corner. Kirby and Charlotte Krause assisted on the goal. Jill Witmer and McEvoy would respond with goals for the Terps to take a 6-1 lead before Evans closed out the scoring in the 67th minute putting home the rebound of her own shot. Evans now leads the team with four goals.
Maryland outshot Princeton 15-13 in the game with 11 of their shots on goal. Princeton had six shots on goal. The Tigers had nine penalty corners to Maryland's six chances. Christina Maida stopped one of five shots faced in the first half while Julia Boyle stopped three of the five she saw in the second half. Maryland's Natalie Hunter made four saves.
Princeton is now 3-5 overall. The Tigers resume their Ivy League slate on Saturday at 12 noon when Columbia visits Class of '52 Stadium.
