Women's Swim/Dive Squad Opens 2012 With Win At Dartmouth
January 30, 2012 | Women's Swimming and Diving
With H-Y-P and the Ivy League Championships less than one month away, the undefeated Princeton women's swimming and diving team was looking for a strong start to 2012. A record-setting swim by sophomore Lisa Boyce helped Princeton to a 175-125 victory at Dartmouth.
Princeton won its 42nd consecutive meet and shook off any rust from nearly two months out of competition with an impressive showing at Dartmouth's Karl Michael Pool. The win improved Princeton's record to 4-0 on the season, with all four wins coming in Ivy League competition.
Boyce set a pool record in the 100 fly, winning by more than three seconds with a time of 55.29. She opened the meet as part of a winning effort in the 200 medley relay, joining teammates Shirley Wang, Emily Yu and Carter Stephens for a victorious time of 1:47.37. She picked up a second individual win in the 50 free, where she beat the field by more than one second in 23.70, and followed with a third in the 100 free (51.37).
Senior Caitlin Baran won the first individual swim of the meet, taking the 400 IM in 4:34.53. Junior Sarah Furgatch placed second in 4:35.19.
After a second-place finish for Laura Loughran in the 200 free (1:54.63), Wang scored a win in the 100 back in 58.16. Princeton senior co-captain Meredith Monroe placed second to her freshman teammate in 58.40.
It was a freshman showdown in the 100 breast, as Tiger classmates Emily Yu and Cara Slear finished 1-2. Yu won the event in 1:06.61, while Slear took second in 1:06.94. Fellow freshman Courtney Ciardiello followed up with a second-place finish in the 200 fly (2:05.41).
Senior Christina Kirkwood had Princeton's top finishes in the diving competitions. She took second in the 1-meter diving event with 252.97 points, and she placed third in the three-meter event with 262.50 points.
Wang placed second in the 200 back in 2:05.00, and Slear followed up with a win in the 200 breast in 2:24.19. Another Class of 2015 member grabbed a victory in the 500, as Reese Iriondo edged Dartmouth's Danielle Kerr in 5:03.01. Classmate Sarah Liang rounded up the individual wins by taking the 200 IM in 2:10.75.
Princeton completed the day with a second-place finish in the 400 free relay, as the team of Monroe, Loughran, Slear, and Stephens finished in 3:32.15.
The Tigers have been challenged throughout their 42-meet win streak, but few have been as daunting as the one Princeton will face next weekend. The annual H-Y-P meet is always a challenge, but when the meet is held at Harvard's own Blodgett Pool, the stakes are raised even higher. Princeton and Harvard have split the last two regular season meets in Blodgett; in 2009, Princeton took a 170-148.5 victory. Three years earlier, Harvard scored a 203-116 victory.
