Sdao Lifts Men's Hockey to 3-2 Win Over Brown in Overtime
January 06, 2012 | Men's Ice Hockey
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (1/6/12) - Junior Michael Sdao scored the golden goal at 3:02 in overtime to give Princeton a 3-2 win over Brown on Friday, Jan. 6 at Meehan Auditorium. Sdao finished the night with three points, having a hand in all three Tigers' goals.
Sdao got the puck from sophomore Will MacDonald who was stationed on the left boards, waiting for an open player. The puck hit Sdao's skate as he reached the blue line and used some great stick work as he made his way to the goal and sent the puck over the blocker of goalie Michael Clemente from the bottom of the right circle. Senior Brodie Zuk also earned an assist as he delivered the puck to MacDonald.
Incidentally, it was Sdao from MacDonald teaming up for the game-winning goal at Meehan last season, a 4-3 victory. That game would also mark goalie Mike Condon's first career win. He would get the win again tonight, his first of the season, making a career-high 40 saves including one on a penalty shot in the second.
Sophomore Andrew Calof scored both of Princeton's goals in regulation. Senior Marc Hagel and sophomore Jack Berger would each get assists tonight.
Princeton struck first and had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period, with all three goals coming within 80 seconds.
After Brown was called for icing a face off was taken to the left of Clemente. Princeton won the face off and Sdao got the puck at the blue line on the left side. He fired a shot and Hagel backhanded it from the doorstep. The puck bounced to the right side where Calof picked up the rebound and put it in between Clemente and the post at 7:20.
The lead would be short lived as the Bears scored just 33 seconds later. Jack Maclellan got the puck behind the net after a scrum for it in the corner. He fed Ryan Jacobson at the bottom of the right circle and beat Condon five hole.
The Tigers capitalized on their first power-play chance of the game at 8:40 after Sdao rifled a shot from the point. It hit Clemente's pads and Berger backhanded a pass to Calof on the left side and Calof buried it.
The second half was scoreless, with Condon being a huge reason for that, as he stopped a penalty shot at 18:41.
Bobby Farnham got a breakaway and Sdao tripped him in the slot resulting in a penalty shot. Farnham skated in and Condon came out to cut off the angle. Condon started to back up as Farnham went to the right but Condon denied him on the right post.
It was the first penalty shot allowed since Feb. 3, 2007 when B.J. Slapsky stopped a shot by Yale's Brad Mills. Since 1997-98, Princeton netminders have stopped all four penalty shots they have faced.
Maclellan knotted the game with a power-play goal at 9:57 of third. Matt Lorito and Matt Wahl would both earn assists.
Princeton's penalty kill did a great job in the game, prior to the Maclellan goal. The Tigers were 5 for 5, allowing just four shots in 8:18 of penalty time.
Clemente finished with 24 stops for Brown, as the Bears outshot Princeton 42-27.
The Tigers were 1 for 2 on the power play and 5 for 6 on the penalty kill.
The win snapped Princeton's five-game winless streak as the Tigers improve to 5-4-1 overall and 4-7-1 in the ECAC. Brown is now 6-7-1 and 3-4 in league play.
Princeton will travel to Yale tomorrow, Jan. 7 for a 7 p.m. game at Ingalls Rink. Quinnipiac beat Yale 2-1 this evening.
