#3 Men's Squash Surges Early, Grabs Key Road Win At #4 Rochester
January 08, 2012 | Men's Squash
If head coach Bob Callahan had any concerns about the youth in his program, they were quick alleviated Sunday afternoon in the first true test of the men's squash season. Third-ranked Princeton got three early wins from its freshman class to score a 6-3 win at No. 4 Rochester.
Playing without both senior co-captain and 2011 All-America Kelly Shannon and four-year starter David Pena, Princeton still went on the road and won five of the first six matches to improve to 6-0 on the season.
Callahan sent out an opening shift that featured two freshmen and a sophomore who played only two varsity matches last season. It was an opportunity for a high-pressure moment to get the best of an inexperienced bunch.
Instead, Princeton won all three and didn't drop a single game.
Freshman Tyler Osborne was impressive at No. 3 over Joe Chapman, pitching a shutout in the first game before winning 11-0, 14-12, 11-7. Classmate Taylor Tutrone dropped only seven points total in an 11-4, 11-0, 11-3 victory, and sophomore Dylan Ward won a hard-fought second game in an 11-3, 11-9, 11-2 victory.
Rochester got its first win of the match at No. 8 when Karm Kumar won in four games over sophomore Ash Egan. Shortly afterwards, another Princeton freshman scored a 3-0 win to put the Tigers squarely in control. Samuel Kang beat the experienced Matt Domenick 11-4, 11-6, 11-9 to send the Tigers to a 4-1 lead.
Senior Chris Callis made sure there wouldn't be any late drama. He scored an 11-5, 11-4, 11-9 win over Andres Duany at the No. 2 spot; that victory is a terrific sign for Callis, who has had his healthiest season in three years and is looking to return to his first-team All-America level of freshman year.
Princeton junior Todd Harrity, the reigning individual national champion, moved his collegiate win streak to 26 with a 3-1 win over Benjamin Fischer at the No. 1 spot. The Yellowjackets scored wins at both the No. 4 and No. 7 spots to finish the match.
Princeton will play its first full Ivy League weekend Jan. 14-15, starting at Dartmouth and concluding with a big showdown in Cambridge against an undefeated Harvard squad.
