PRINCETON, N.J. (3/2/12) – The Princeton women's lacrosse team entertains its toughest opponent of the 2012 season, thus far, as No. 5 Duke comes to Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium on Saturday, March 3 for a 1 p.m., game.
Eye on the TigersPrinceton is 1-1 on the season and is ranked No. 8 in the IWLCA poll and No. 7 in the Inside Lacrosse poll. The Tigers opened the season with an explosive 16-3 win at Villanova before a heartbreaking double overtime loss to Rutgers 11-10 on Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium on Wednesday night.
Junior Jaci Gassaway is the team's leading scorer with eight goals and four assists for 12 points. Sophomore Mary-Kate Sivilli has four goals and three assists, and freshman Erin McMunn has two goals and a team-high five assists for seven points each. Senior Barb Previ and junior Charlotte Davis add four and three points, respectively. Defensively, senior Lindsey deButts has made three caused turnovers and has five ground balls. Freshman Erin Slifer leads the team in ground balls with six, and in draw controls with five. Sophomore Sarah Lloyd and Previ have won four draws each. Freshman Annie Woehling has started in both games and has a 6.65 goals against average and a .235 save percentage.
The Series
Duke leads the all-time series with Princeton by a slim 8-7 margin. The Blue Devils have won the last three games, with Princeton's last win coming in 2008.
Scouting the Blue Devils
Duke played its first game on Feb. 4, just four days after Princeton was allowed to start practice on Feb. 1. The Blue Devils are 4-2 on the season and are 1-0 in the ACC with a 10-9 win over Maryland last Saturday. Duke's lone loss was to Northwestern at home, 13-5. The Blue Devils are ranked No. 5 in the IWLCA national poll, and No. 3 in the Inside Lacrosse poll.
Kerrin Maurer leads the team offensively with 20 points on nine goals and a team-high 11 assists. Makenzie Hommel is second on the team in scoring with nine goals and five assists, while Kim Wenger and Emma Hamm have 13 points apiece. Maddy Morrissey is the team's leading goal scorer with 11 tallies on the year. Molly Quirke and Taylor Trimble have both scored 10 goals apiece. Emma leads the team at the circle with 29 draw controls and also has a team-best eight caused turnovers, along with Casey Beyel. Taylor Virden has the most ground balls on the team with 10. Mollie Mackler has started all six games in goal and has made 45 saves on 98 shots for a .459 save percentage and a 9.21 goals against average.
Last Time We Met (March 5, 2011)
Lizzy Drumm '11 had six goals but a nine-goal halftime deficit was too much to overcome as Princeton fell to No. 4 Duke, 19-12 at Koskinen Stadium.
Despite a 12-3 halftime deficit, Princeton refused to quit and used a 14-2 advantage in draw controls during the second half to outscore the Blue Devils 9-7.
The teams traded free-position goals to start the game but Duke tallied a quick two goals to take the 3-1 lead. Jaci Gassaway feed Drumm from behind the cage for a goal on the doorstep to make it a one-goal game at 22:39.
Duke used a 9-1 run over the final 20 minutes getting goals from nine different players to take the 12-3 lead.
The Tigers scored two quick goals early in the half from Drumm and Sam Ellis but Duke was able to match the effort with goals from Virginia Crotty and Christie Kaestner. The two squads traded goals the rest of the way until Duke pulled ahead 19-9 with 3:51 remaining.
Princeton would close out the game scoring three unanswered. Drumm scored a pair of goals within 22 seconds of each other and junior Cassie Pyle added an unassisted marker.
In addition to Drumm's six goals, which matched her career-high, Charlotte Davis had three goals and Gassaway would have one goal and two assists. Barb Previ, Pyle and Ellis all finished with two points apiece. Drum's six goals matched her career best in a game.
Erin Tochihara '11 made 10 saves for the Tigers, while her counterpart Mollie Mackler made 10 on the other end.
