Women's Lacrosse Suffers Defeat to Cornell 13-12 in OT

PRINCETON, N.J. (3/31/12) - No. 18 Cornell outscored No. 16 Princeton in overtime to earn a 13-12 win in women's lacrosse on Saturday, March 31 at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium.
A six-minute non-sudden death overtime tilted in Cornell's favor 2-1. The Big Red had been in control in the center circle during regulation, 14-10, and would win the opening draw of the overtime period. Caroline Salisbury would score at 48 seconds later to give her team a 12-11 lead.
The Tigers won the next draw control but in the process would lose junior Jaci Gassaway to an injury. She hobbled off the field and would later return with three minutes to play. An errant pass would lead to a turnover and the game's leading scorer Jessi Steinberg scored on a low shot on the right side with 3:17 left.
The Tigers quickly cut the lead back to one, when junior Sam Ellis won the next draw and fed junior Caroline Rehfuss who found senior Barb Previ open for the goal at 3:01. Previ would keep possession for Princeton by winning the next draw but the Tigers turned the ball over with 1:16 left and Cornell would clear and hang on to the ball for the remainder.
There was 10 lead changes and nine ties in the game. The teams ended the first half tied 7-7, with neither team taking more than a two-goal lead.
The Big Red strung together three straight goals midway through the second that gave them their first lead of the second half and a 11-9 edge with less than seven minutes to play.
Senior Cassie Pyle cut the deficit to one, at 4:54 with an unassisted goal, her third of the game. Sophomore Sarah Lloyd would push the game into overtime with a goal on a feed from Ellis who picked up a loose ball after Cornell failed to clear the ball and Gassaway caused the turnover.
Cornell won the next draw and passed it around, waiting for the clock to wind down before taking the shot. However with eight seconds left, the Big Red turned the ball over but there wasn't enough time for Princeton to get it down the field as the horn sounded.
Sophomore Mary-Kate Sivilli matched her career-high of four points as she led the Tigers with one goal and three assists. Pyle collected her fifth consecutive hat trick. Ellis, Lloyd, freshman Erin McMunn and junior Charlotte Davis each had two points. Freshman goalie Annie Woehling had another great game in goal making nine saves her most impressive coming in the final four minutes of regulation on a shot by Lauren Halpern as Cornell led 11-10.
Steinberg led the Big Red with four goals and one assist. Junior Caroline Salisbury had three goals and one assist. Seniors Shannon McHugh and Katie Kirk had three goals apiece. Goalie Kyla Dambach made four saves, three in the second half to earn her fourth win of the season.
The stats were nearly even in a game that was remained tight until the final second. Cornell had 24 shots to Princeton's 22. Princeton won 17 ground balls to Cornell's 15. Cornell finished with 15 draw controls to Princeton's 13. Cornell was 1-1 from the eight meter, while Princeton was 2 for 5. The Tigers cleared 100% while Cornell was tripped up twice on 15 chances.
Today's game marks Princeton's first Ivy League loss of the season, as the Tigers fall to 2-1 in league play and 4-4 overall. Cornell is now 7-2 and 3-2 in the Ivy League.
