Men's Lightweights Return To Ivy Competition, Face Cornell For Platt Cup
April 13, 2012 | Men's Rowing - Lightweight
PLATT CUP HISTORY l NATIONAL POLL
The Princeton men's lightweight crew, 2-1 on the season and building on an off week, will return to the water this Saturday to take on Cornell in the 49th annual Platt Cup competition.
The weekend will feature a pair of teams that currently share the No. 4 position in the latest USRowing national poll, as well as a pair of teams with real aspirations to wrest gold away from Ivy brethren Harvard and Yale.
Princeton owns wins over both Columbia and Navy, and its lone loss came to No. 3 Georgetown two weeks ago. Cornell is 1-1 on the season after splitting last weekend's regatta against a pair of Ivy teams. Top-ranked Harvard defeated the Big Red, but Cornell scored a win over Penn.
While neither team is currently ranked in the top three, the two programs have been among the most dominant in the sport recently. Over the last six years, both Princeton (2009, 2010) and Cornell (2006, 2008) have won two EARC/Ivy League titles.
The chase for the 2012 championship may still be a month away, but Saturday will provide a good test for both programs. For Princeton, it is a chance to get back to its winning ways after a three-second loss to the Hoyas last weekend.
Princeton leads the all-time Platt Cup competition 36-12, and it has won four straight races over the Big Red. The Tigers defeated Cornell by 3.1 seconds on the Cayuga Inlet last season. The regatta is scheduled to begin at 10:25, with the Platt Cup varsity eight race to take place at 11:10 on Bud Smith Memorial Race Course.
