PRINCETON, N.J. (4/6/12) – The Princeton women's lacrosse team resumes Ivy League play and looks to stay in race for the league title when it hosts Yale on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m.
Eye on the Tigers
Princeton snapped a two-game one-goal losing skid on Wednesday with a 14-13 win at Temple. The Tigers have played four one-goal games this season. Princeton is 5-4 on the season and is ranked No. 18 in the latest IWLCA national poll. The Tigers are 2-1 in league play, their lone loss to Cornell 13-12 in overtime. The Tigers two wins were won by an average of 11 goals. Junior Jaci Gassaway is at the top the scoring column with 33 points off of 24 goals and nine assists. Freshman Erin McMunn has the most assists on the team, 23 total, and adds nine goals for 32 points. In her last game she earned a program record, six assists in a win at Temple. Senior Cassie Pyle contributes 25 goals and four assists. Sophomores Sarah Lloyd and Mary-Kate Sivilli both have 19 points apiece. Freshman goalie Annie Woehling has started in goal in every game. She has an 8.94 goals against average and .413 save percentage..
The Series
Princeton leads the all-time series with Yale 23-14-1 since the teams started playing in 1975. The Tigers have won the last four meetings, including a 9-3 win last year. Yale's last win in the series was in 2007, a 6-5 game when it was ranked No. 15 and Princeton was ranked No. 9.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Yale is 3-6 on the season and is 0-3 in the Ivy League, with losses to Dartmouth (9-8), Penn (12-6) and Harvard (7-5). The Bulldogs last time out was a 16-12 loss at Colgate. Senior Caroline Crow has scored a team-high 16 goals and adds five assists for 21 points. Junior Devon Rhodes has 17 points on 13 goals and four assists and freshman Cathryn Avallone has 12 goals and three assists for 15 points. Avallone is the team leader in ground balls with 20 with freshman Christina Doherty second on the list with 15. Doherty has a team-high 22 draw controls, while sophomore Ashley McCormick is the team leader in caused turnovers with 10, while scoring 11 goals. Yale has utilized two goalies, senior Whitney Quackenbush and sophomore Erin McMullan. McMullan has a 10.98 GAA and a .422 save percentage and a 2-3 record. Quackenbush has a 12.41 GAA and a .384 save percentage and is 1-2.
Last Time We Met (from the archives)
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (4/9/11)- Princeton got goals from five different goal scorers as it defeated Yale, 9-3 on Saturday, April 9 at Reese Stadium.
Freshman Sarah Lloyd had a three-point game with two goals and an assist. Junior Barb Previ, senior Lizzy Drumm and sophomore Jaci Gassaway had two goals each and senior Maisie Devine picked up two assists. Senior Erin Tochihara made five saves in goal.
Drumm scored just 1:09 into the game with help from Devine.
Two minutes later Devon Rhodes would tally an unassisted goal to even the game at 1-1. It would be Yale's last goal for exactly 46 minutes as Princeton scored five straight to take a 6-1 lead.
Pyle, Gassaway and Previ each scored in the first half to give the Tigers the 4-1 lead at the intermission.
Drumm would get her second at 16:28 and Previ would follow up with a free-position goal.
Jenn Devito would end the Bulldog's drought at 10:33 with a free-position goal.
Lloyd would sandwich another Devito goal with two of her own in the final eight minutes. Devine would feed Gassaway for the final goal at 1:20 for the 9-3 win.
Whitney Quackenbush made 18 saves, 11 in the second half.
Princeton had a 33-13 advantage in shots, putting 27 of those shots on target. Yale had eight on frame. Both teams picked up 20 ground balls and Yale won eight of 14 draw controls.
