Shon Posts Even-Par 72 to Open NCAA East Regional
May 10, 2012 | Women's Golf
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Kelly Shon will enter the second of three days at the NCAA East Regional at Penn State in contention to advance to the NCAA Championship.
Shon fired an even-par 72 in Thursday's first round, tying her for sixth overall. Shon was one of 11 players to turn in a 72 Thursday, and if the tournament ended today, she would be in a playoff with Central Florida's Monifa Sealy for one of the two bids to the NCAA finals. Of the 16 golfers who shot a 72 or better Thursday, only Shon, Sealy and Maryland's Juliet Vongphoumy did not end the day with their teams among the top eight in the standings.
The team standings, of course, can shift over the course of the tournament, putting different players in contention for one of the two NCAA finals spots for individuals from the East Regional. Those spots will go to the two highest-finishing golfers whose teams are not in the top eight.
Shon ended the day as the top finisher among the six invited individuals in the field of 126.
After bogeying three of the first 11 holes, Shon rallied with birdies at 13, a par-4, and 18, a par-5, to finish even on the day. Her bogeys came on the par-4 second hole, the par-3 eighth hole, and the par-4 11th hole, while she also birdied the par-5 ninth hole to stand +1 at the turn.
Shon will tee off Friday's second round at 12:45 p.m. from the 10th hole. Complete results for Thursday's play can be found here.
