Nestled into the beautiful landscape and historic architecture of Princeton University, Springdale Golf Club was formed in 1895, establishing it as one of the first private clubs in New Jersey. A true golfer’s club for players of all ages, Springdale’s 18-hole golf course dates back to 1915 and was designed by Gerard Lambert, then revised in 1926 by William Flynn. The walkable par-71 course has a rating of 70.5, slope of 131, and measures 6,380 yards. Currently, under management by Troon Privè, Springdale is known for its superior conditions, small and challenging greens, and being the home to the Princeton men’s and women’s golf teams.
With the full support of Springdale, Princeton Golf is in the midst of a three-phased plan to enhance the practice experience for their teams and the members of the Club. The initial phase, completed in 2018, involved the construction of the Tiger Performance Center. A year-round golf facility equipped with four hitting bays, a private teaching studio with a Full Swing golf simulator, and Pro Putt putting surfaces throughout. All practice areas include overhead heaters, so the student-athletes can train on a cold winter day or a rainy spring afternoon. To make the space even more special, the Tiger Performance Center features 24 oversized lockers and a fully furnished lounge area for schoolwork, meetings, or simply spending time with fellow Tigers.
At Springdale Golf Club, the Princeton golf programs have exclusive access to four year-round hitting bays in a facility that includes 24 lockers and a fully furnished lounge area.
In spring of 2021, Princeton and Springdale teamed up again to begin Phase II of their project. Steve Dana ’94, All-American golfer and the architect of this phase, explained in announcing the project, “At the Tiger Performance Center, we plan to create practice facilities exclusively for the men and women of the Princeton University golf teams. Centered around the beautiful new Tiger Performance Center clubhouse, the new facilities will include an expanded outdoor practice tee from which to hit into the existing practice field. This new tee will flow directly into a practice fairway that connects two new practice greens on which the team can work on all aspects of their short games—from 60 yards to 60 inches. Further, one green will also include a practice bunker for both greenside and fairway bunker work. Additionally, with excess fill created from lowering the grade in the existing practice field for enhanced visibility, we will build a new “Tiger” tee on the existing tenth hole. We hope that this new tee will encourage the addition of several more “Tiger” tees at Springdale so that our teams can enjoy, and be challenged by, a lengthened Springdale that is more suited to the modern game.” He continues, “It truly is an honor to help our current and next generation of Princeton golfers by designing these new practice amenities. These facilities, no doubt, will enhance their experiences on campus and develop their love, not only for golf, but also for Princeton.” As Phase III takes shape, more details will be shared, but it will involve improvements to the current practice facilities. Will Green, the J. Stuart Francis ’74 Head Coach of Men’s Golf, said. “The finished product places Princeton firmly at the forefront of the Ivy League for golf facilities. To be able to partner with Springdale Golf Club to make this concept a reality, literally across the street from campus, shows the commitment that Princeton University and our neighbors have to our program. Princeton has long stood for excellence in every facet of the undergraduate experience, and the Performance Center at Springdale absolutely embodies that commitment.”
The Princeton golf programs also have the ability to play at Jasna Polana, located in Princeton just a few miles from campus. The course features professional quality training amenities and facilities for both golf teams, including two large putting greens, a chipping/sand area, and a 350-yard driving range.
