Qu, Stephens Elected Women's Swimming Co-Captains; Award Winners Announced

Kathy Qu and Carter Stephens were named co-captains for the 2012-13 Princeton women's swimming and diving team during the annual postseason team banquet Wednesday night. The five team award winners, including multiple-time Ivy League champion Lisa Boyce, were also announced.
Both have been key contributors to Princeton throughout their careers, which have included a pair of Ivy League Championship seasons. Stephens has reached eight individual Ivy League championship finals in nine attempts, including all three during the 2012 conference meet. She placed a career-best third in the 100 fly and added a fifth-place finish in the 200 fly and a sixth-place finish in the 50 free.
Qu has also been a consistent scorer for the Tigers, and she had a 10th-place finish in the 100 fly this past season. She won the C-final in the 200 free, and she reached the 2011 Ivy League final in the 100 fly.
"I'm very pleased that Kathy and Carter were chosen as the 2012-13 team captains," head coach Susan Teeter said. "Both have great work ethic and dedication to our team, and I believe they will be terrific leaders for Princeton next year."
While Princeton prepared for its future, the Tigers also paid tribute to their recent past by naming its five award winners for the 2011-12 season.
The Class of 1974 Women's Swimming & Diving Award
This award is presented to an upperclass woman who has shown consistent dedication to the sport and who has done the most to inspire team unity and enthusiasm. The award was originally presented by Cathy Corcione and CeCe Herron, both members of the Class of '74.
Meredith Monroe has earned both individual and team Ivy League titles and an All-America honor during her brilliant Princeton career. She had three Top-10 finishes in the 2012 Ivy League championships, and she won the 2010 individual Ivy League title in the 200 back. A former All-America in the 800 free relay, Monroe served as team co-captain this past year.
The Class of 2000 Susan S. Teeter Award
This award is given to a senior class swimmer or diver, who, during her four year career, has distinguished herself as both an outstanding student and a valuable member of the Women's Swimming and Diving Team.
Kerry Gruendel also served as team co-captain this past season, and she reached the 2012 championship final in the 200 IM. She reached four championship finals during her career and helped Princeton to Ivy League titles in both 2010 and 2011.
The Women's Freshman Swimming & Diving Award
The Women's Freshman Swimming & Diving Award is presented to a freshman each year for
outstanding sportsmanship and performance.
Courtney Ciardiello reached the championship final in the 200 back during the 2012 conference meet, and she reached the consolation finals in both the 100 and 200 fly. She will represent Princeton at the 2012 Olympic Trials and is considered a key part of the very talented Class of 2015.
Friends of Princeton Swimming & Diving Award for
Women
This award is presented to a woman whose perseverance in practice and effort in competition have led to the greatest improvement overall, either in a single year, or over a period of years.
Christina Kirkwood made her final season a memorable one by winning her first Ivy League individual championship in the 1-meter competition at the 2012 conference meet. She reached ever championship final over her last two years and was part of the conference team all four years.
The Jerry Horton Award for Women's Most Valuable
Swimmer or Diver
The award; established by Jerry Horton, class of 1942 and longtime Friend of Princeton Swimming; is given to the woman whose consistently outstanding performance contributed most to the
team's success.
Lisa Boyce won three individual Ivy League titles this past season, and she earned a berth in the NCAA Championships in the 50 free, 100 free and 100 back (those were her Ivy League championship wins). She earned Mid-Major All-America honors by collegeswimming.com, and she will compete at the Olympic Trials in the 100 free and 100 back. Boyce has won four Ivy League individual titles in her career, and she holds the Princeton record in the 100 back.
