Against a hungry Rutgers team looking to break a five-game losing streak against Division I opponents, the Princeton men's basketball team instead kept its winning streak intact with a 78-73 victory Wednesday night in Piscataway.

Princeton pulled away after the midway point of the second half, using a 10-2 run to break open a 59-57 game and take its first double-digit lead at 69-59 inside of four minutes to go. Until the final seconds, it was never less than a six-point margin from there.

Neither team could gain lasting separation in the first half. Princeton had an 11-4 run to gain a seven point lead at 17-10 less than nine minutes in. Rutgers answered right back with an 11-2 run to take a 21-19 lead with more than eight minutes to go in the opening period. The margin was never greater than five points the rest of the half.

Four Tigers finished in double figures, with T.J. Bray putting in a game-high 23 and a trio - Denton Koon, Hans Brase and Ben Hazel - chipping in 14 apiece.

16: Princeton hit 16 3-pointers, its most against a Division I opponent since Feb. 15, 2002 at Dartmouth, where the Tigers also hit 16 from long range. Five Tigers had 3-pointers, all with multiple treys, including Hans Brase's 3.

A fall-away 3-pointer for T.J. Bray with less than five minutes to go to that beat the shot clock seemed to signal the way the game was headed in the waning minutes. It made the lead 66-57 for Princeton.

• Princeton continued its best start since the 1997-98 season, now standing at 7-1. Princeton was 7-1 through eight games in 1997-98 and held a No. 22 national ranking by the AP.

• Princeton now leads the all-time series over Rutgers, which started in 1917, 75-45.

• Spencer Weisz (above, left) became the first Tiger from New Jersey since Brian Earl '99 to play in a win over Rutgers at the RAC. Earl did it in 1997.

• After a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards against FDU to win Ivy Rookie of the Week honors, Spencer Weisz had a game-high eight boards against Rutgers.

• Princeton won back-to-back games at the RAC for the first time since 1997 and 1999.

• Princeton's 34 3-pointers tried were its most since the Tigers lofted 38 in a 74-68 overtime win over Harvard in Jadwin Gym on Feb. 9, 2007. Princeton took 37 of those 3-point tries in regulation.

• T.J. Bray tied his career high with 23 points. He had 23 against Penn in the game at Jadwin last season. He had eight assists, two off the season-best 10 he posted against George Mason on Nov. 26.

• Ben Hazel (above, right) has scored a career-high 14 points for the third time this season and has reached double figures in points in five of the last six games. He had two double-figure games in his first two seasons with the program entering 2013-14.

• Princeton's 78 points are a season-high total in regulation (the Tigers had 81 against Lafayette after scoring 68 in regulation), bettering the 77 Princeton had last time out against FDU. It's the most Princeton has scored in regulation against any opponent since putting 79 on Bucknell last December in Jadwin. It's the most Princeton has scored on the road since scoring 95 at Evansville (yes, in regulation) in the 2012 College Basketball Invitational.

• Princeton's 78 points were its most against Rutgers in regulation since scoring 79 at the RAC on Jan. 3, 1995. The Tigers had 78 in an OT win in Jadwin in 2010.

• Princeton's six straight wins match the longest streak of the two-plus seasons Mitch Henderson has headed the program. It's the longest win streak since the 2010-11 Tigers reeled off 10 straight.

For the first time since 2007, Princeton will head to State College to face Penn State (8-3) Saturday at 2 p.m. The Nittany Lions, who were 68-59 winners over Duquesne (3-4) tonight in Pittsburgh, will return for the game to Rec Hall for the first time since moving into the Bryce Jordan Center in 1996.
