Volleyball Moves Into Second Place With Win Over Rutgers-Newark
March 23, 2013 | Men's Volleyball
Dominant performances from middles Michael Dye and Brad Howard, as well as strong play throughout the lineup, led the Princeton men's volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep at Rutgers-Newark Saturday afternoon. The victory moved Princeton back into a second-place tie with George Mason in the EIVA standings.
Dye recorded a team-best nine kills and added five blocks, while Howard had six kills and five blocks, in the 25-20, 25-23, 25-19 victory over the Scarlet Raiders. Both were extremely efficient; Dye had only one error in 11 swings and hit .727, while Howard didn't have any errors and hit .600 for the match. As a team, Princeton hit .322 for the match, including a sizzling .429 in the final set.
Head coach Sam Shweisky was able to use most of his lineup during the three-set win, which allowed several starters to get some rest before this week's key two-match homestand with Saint Francis (Thursday, 7 pm) and No. 13 Penn State (Friday, 7). Both Michael Bagnell and Jeff Stapleton came in and recorded seven kills apiece, while Ryan Poladian added two kills and a block.
Junior setter Davis Waddell recorded 36 assists and added three kills on four swings for the Tigers, who are now 9-6 overall, 7-2 in the EIVA.
