PRINCETON, N.J. - The Princeton University field hockey team fell to 3-9 on the season after suffering an 8-1 setback to No. 2 University of Maryland on Bedford Field.
Taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission, the Terps netted six second half goals to improve to 12-2 on the season and 19-7-1 all-time against the Orange and Black.
Cat Caro recorded the Tigers' lone goal in the 49th minute as Maryland amassed a 28-13 shot advantage and 10-7 edge in penalty corners. Princeton goalie Anya Gersoff finished one save shy of matching a career-high with 11.
Paving the way for a Terp offense that saw six different players factor into the scoring, Maxine Fluharty turned in a hat trick. Welma Luus added a pair of goals on five shots, while goalkeeper Brooke Cabrera made four stops.
Notching the game's first tally at the 15:13 mark of the first half, Luus carried it into the center of the circle before ripping a shot into the bottom left corner of the Tiger cage. Gaining possession near the centerline just before the break, Alyssa Parker made a run up the middle of the field and doubled the margin at 33:54.
Building on the momentum early in the second period, Fluharty scored her first of the evening with a hard shot from the right side of the circle. Cleaning up a rebound in the 43rd minute, Luus made it 4-0.
Hoping to jumpstart the Tiger attack, Lexi Quirk held the ball on the right side of the attacking third with just over 22 minutes remaining in regulation. Playing it into the circle, the freshman found Caro, who backhanded a shot into the cage at 48:01.
Just 4:19 later, Maryland responded thanks to a Lein Holsboer goal off of a penalty corner. After Katie Gerzabek backhanded a shot of her own into the net at 54:40, Fluharty capped off the scoring with a pair of goals at 58:51 and 62:25.
Princeton will look to break back into the win column on Saturday, Oct. 18 when it plays host to Brown University.
