WEEK 7 GAME NOTES (PDF)
*Due to Wednesday night's inclement weather forecast, the game time has been moved up to 4 p.m.*
Going the Distance
For the second time in as many games, Princeton suffered a heartbreaking defeat in double overtime, falling to the University of Delaware last Friday, 2-1. Holding a 9-4 shot advantage during the first half, Princeton broke through in the 11th minute on Maddie Copeland's team-high sixth goal of the season. Coming on strong in the second period, Delaware netted the equalizer in the 52nd minute on an Allie Mikelson redirection off of a penalty corner. With both teams still knotted at 1-1 after the end of the first overtime, the Blue Hens came up with the game winner just 41 seconds into the second extra session to even its all-time record against the Tigers to 12-12-3.
Close Calls
In the midst of an uncharacteristic 3-8 season, the Orange and Black have narrowly missed out on picking up a much-needed win in each of their last three games. Battling back from a two-goal deficit against Columbia on Oct. 3, the Tigers pulled even in the 62nd minute before seeing the Lions notch the game winner with just 1:15 remaining in regulation. Also surrendering the contest's first two goals against No. 10 Syracuse, Princeton once again came back, taking a 3-2 lead before giving up the game's final two scores, including the winner in the second OT. Against Delaware it was the Tigers that struck first, but a Blue Hens equalizer in the 52nd minute and the game winner 41 seconds into the second extra session dealt Princeton another close loss. The Tigers are 0-3 in overtime this season, with a 1-5 mark in one-goal games. Of the Orange and Black's eight losses, five have come against ranked opponents.
Home Stretch
With six regular season games left, Princeton will need to run the table to avoid its first losing season since 2004. The Tigers will play five of their final six at Bedford Field, with their remaining non-conference match-ups against No. 2 Maryland and No. 4 UConn on the horizon. Currently tied for second in the Ivy League with a 2-1 mark, Princeton will meet Brown, Harvard and Penn at home, with their lone league road game slated for Nov. 1 at first-place Cornell.
Leading the Way
Netting three goals in her last two outings, Maddie Copeland has already recorded a career-high with six goals this season. Netting her first goal of the year against No. 4 Penn State on Sept. 12, she had a pair of scores in a 4-0 shutout of Dartmouth on Sept. 20. Helping to spark the Tigers' comeback against Syracuse, she registered consecutive goals just 4:09 apart early in the second half. She accounted for the Tigers' lone goal in a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Delaware in the 11th minute. In 47 career appearances, she has posted 33 points (16G, 1A).
Balancing Act
Eight different players have combined to score the Tigers' 22 goals this season. Maddie Copeland leads the way with six goals, while Sydney Kirby and Ryan McCarthy have five and three goals, respectively. Cat Caro, Allison Evans and Cassidy Arner each have a pair of tallies, while Teresa Benvenuti and Rachel Park have a goal apiece. With five other players recording at least one assist, 13 Tigers have registered a point for Princeton in 2014.
Closing In
Kristen Holmes-Winn sits just two wins shy of her 150th as the head coach of the Princeton field hockey program. Her 148 victories thus far rank second only to Beth Bozman (188) on the school's all-time charts. The Tigers have posted double-digit wins in all but two of her 12 seasons, including a program-record 21 victories during the team's 2012 national championship run. Going 75-5 against the Ivy League, Holmes-Winn has helped guide Princeton to 10 conference titles.
Rivalry Renewed
Maryland holds an 18-7-1 all-time record against Princeton. Going 4-2-1 in the first seven meetings from 1981-98, the Tigers dropped 13-straight games to the Terrapins from 1999-2009. Snapping its losing skid in the 2010 meeting, the Orange and Black secured a 4-2 decision. After dropping the 2011 affair (6-2), Princeton won both showdowns during its national championship run in 2012. In 2013, Maryland defeated Princeton during the regular season (3-1) before ousting the Tigers in the NCAA Championship Quarterfinals, 3-2.
When Last We Met
Besting the Tigers by a 3-1 score during the regular season, the Terrapins edged out the Orange and Black in the NCAA Quarterfinals, 3-2. Netting three goals over a three-plus minute stretch spanning the first and second halves, Maryland took the initial meeting by a two-goal margin. Each team recorded 10 shots, with Princeton finishing with a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Maddie Copeland accounted for the Tigers' lone score with an unassisted tally at 48:23. Anya Gersoff made six saves. In the rematch, Sydney Kirby gave Princeton the lead with a goal off of a penalty corner just two minutes after the opening whistle. Just 3:04 later, Maryland answered with an equalizer before Allison Evans put the Tigers back on top at 34:27. Once again coming up with a quick response, the Terrapins needed just 27 seconds to make it 2-2 before ultimately netting what proved to be the game winner in the 39th minute. Maryland held a 14-9 shot advantage, with both teams earning four penalty corners. Gersoff made four stops.
Scouting Maryland
Riding a six-game win streak, Maryland enters Wednesday night's showdown with an 11-2 record. Dominating Penn in their last outing, eight Terrapins recorded a goal in a 9-0 rout. Anna Dessoye paved the way with a career-high six points on a goal and four assists. Sarah Sprink had a pair of goals. Maxine Fluharty and Moira Putsch currently lead the team with eight goals apiece, while Sprink and Dessoye each have seven. Also with 11 assists to her credit, Dessoye has a team-high 25 points, while Katie Gerzabek has dished out a squad-best 13 helpers. Posting a 1.49 goals-against average, Brooke Cabrera has seen the majority of time in net, logging 846:54 minutes with a 0.720 save percentage. As a team, Maryland leads the Big Ten in seven categories, including goals scored per game (3.62), goals allowed per game (1.23) and goals off penalty corners (1.31).
