PRINCETON, N.J. (10/7/14) – It was an offensive explosion for the Princeton men's soccer team as the Tigers scored five goals to defeat in-state rival Rutgers, 5-2 on Tuesday night on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium.
Junior Thomas Sanner recorded a hat trick and added an assist, while senior Cameron Porter had two goals and one assist. Sanner is the first Tiger to collect three goals in a game since Antoine Hoppenot '12, now with the Philadelphia Union, did so in 2009 against Yale. Four other players made the score sheet, including a two-assist effort from junior Brendan McSherry.
“I thought it was a really good response to Saturday's loss and the frustration from not having one of our better games, and not winning a lot of the 50/50 battles and individual match ups,” Princeton head coach Jim Barlow said. “I think the guys all responded well today with a lot of energy and battled start to finish. Even going down a goal, they had a very good response to that and got back into the game and competed hard. I feel good about the effort today and hopefully it something they can bring all the time now.”
Princeton (4-3-2) had a great start right off the opening kick, as Sanner had a blocked header, senior Myles McGinley had a header saved and McSherry had a shot saved in the opening minutes. The Tigers got unlucky just moments later however when Jason Wright took advantage of a defensive miscue and finished off a ball from Ross Tetro to put Rutgers (3-6-1) on the board first.
Porter tied the game in the 12th minute with his league-leading sixth goal of the season. Senior Andrew Mills pushed the ball ahead with an outstretched leg and Sanner one-timed a beautiful heel flick to Porter. Porter settled and left-footed the ball past David Greczek.
Sanner scored the go-ahead goal in the 19th minute coming off of a McSherry corner kick. Rutgers' defender Drew Morgan, who later was ejected from the game, tried to kick the ball away after it bounced around inside the box and in doing so deflected it off of Sanner and into the goal.
Sanner made it 3-1 Tigers with 12.8 seconds left in the first half on a great play started by junior Nico Hurtado. Hurtado brought the ball up the left side of the field and sent a through ball to Porter. Porter raced to the goal and with Greczek coming out, he saw Sanner open in the middle and centered to him for the goal.
Wright cut the lead back to one with his second tally of the game in the 54th minute. It was a foot race between he and goalie Ben Hummel with Wright winning the chase for the ball and easily scoring.
Sanner capped off his hat trick in the 59th minute with McSherry and Mills earning assists and Porter finished the scoring in the 68th minute with help from McSherry and sophomore Mark Romanowski.
It was in the 64th minute that Morgan was sent off with a red card, leaving Rutgers with 10 players. Seven minutes later goalkeeper Mitchell Wailer replaced Grezek, for the final 20 minutes. Both keepers had four saves apiece.
Hummel earned the win making five saves in 82:30. Josh Haberman made his first career appearance in goal, but did not face a shot in the final 7:30.
Princeton outshot Rutgers 22-14 and had five more corner kicks, 8-3.
The Tigers resume Ivy League action on Saturday, Oct. 11 when they host Brown at 4 p.m.
