After a weekend in neutral and a weekend in park, the Princeton men's hockey team puts it in drive for Weekend No. 3 of the young 2014-15 season.
Princeton began its season with a pair of games at the Liberty Hockey Invitational at the Prudential Center in Newark, neutral site games against Yale and Merrimack. After that, Princeton had its home openers last weekend, when Cornell and Colgate came to Baker Rink.
Now it's time for a trip to New York's Capital Region, for the first two actual away games of the year - and the first two games out of New Jersey. Princeton's chore is not an easy one - its two opponents are the first-place team in the league (albeit very early) and the defending NCAA champion.

Princeton is 1-2-1 after four games. The Tigers have fared much better on Friday than Saturday through the first two weekends.
Princeton opened the season by tying Yale 2-2 (though the Tigers lost a shootout to determine which team would advance to the final of the Liberty Hockey Invitational) on a Friday and falling 6-1 to Merrimack Saturday in the third-place game. Last weekend, in the first home weekend and first ECAC weekend, Princeton defeated Cornell 2-1 Friday and then lost 5-1 to Colgate Saturday.
Added together, and Princeton is 1-0-1 on Friday, outscoring its opponents 4-3, and 0-2-0 on Saturday, having been outscored 11-2.

Princeton will play the two most recent NCAA champions within its first two games.
The Tigers opened their season with a 2-2 tie against Yale, who won the 2013 NCAA title. After playing RPI Friday, Princeton will take on 2014 NCAA champion Union.
Union defeated Princeton 3-0 in both meetings a year ago, and the Tigers in face are 0-7-2 in the last nine meetings against Union, dating to a 3-1 win in Princeton in 2009.
The Tigers have fared much better against RPI, especially in Troy, where Princeton is 5-1-1 in its last seven games at Houston Field House.

Princeton went 2-8 in Ivy League games in 2013-14 but won its first Ivy game of 2014-15 with its 2-1 win over Cornell last Friday night. Princeton went 4-18 in the ECAC last year but is off to a 1-1-0 start this year.
The Tigers are led this year by Ron Fogarty, in his first year as head coach at Princeton. Fogary was 163-27-10 at Division III Adrian College before coming to Princeton. A Colgate grad, Fogarty is no stranger to the ECAC.

Princeton is still playing catch-up to the non-Ivy schools after starting the season later. Princeton will be playing its fifth and sixth games of the season; Union and RPI will be playing Games 11 and 12.
* * *
Not surprisingly, the six non-Ivy schools rank 1-6 in goals scored in the ECAC, while the six Ivy schools rank 7-12.
RPI has outscored Princeton 16-6 to date, but that is a bit misleading. RPI averages 1.6 goals per game; Princeton aveages 1.5.
On the other hand, RPI has scored 10 goals in four league games after scoring six goals in six non-league games.
Union is the second-highest scoring team in the league with 32 goals in 10 games, behind only St. Lawrence (35 in 10).

Princeton has scored six goals in four games, of which half - all three in Newark - were scored by freshmen.

Rensselaer is currently in first place in the ECAC stadings with six points (3-1-0).
The main reason for RPI's success is that it swept Union in a pair of games between the travel partners. RPI defeated Union 6-1 and 2-1 on consecutive days two weekends ago in its first two ECAC games.
The Engineers then lost 4-0 to Harvard and beat Dartmouth 2-1 last weekend. By the end of this weekend, RPI will have played six ECAC games, five of which will have been at home and the sixth of which will have been after the short drive to Union.

Princeton's game against Colgate featured 24 penalties, 11 by the Raiders and 13 by the Tigers.

Union (first) and Rensselaer (third) are in the top three in the league in shots per game in conference games. Princeton ranks 12th in the league.
Union has taken 139 shots in four league games (34.75 per game). Princeton has taken 43 in two league games (21.5).
Princeton took 37 shots in its opener against Yale. Since then, Princeton has taken 69 shots in its last three games, an average of 23 per game. For the season Union has outshot Princeton 335-106, which again is misleading, giving that Union has played 10 games to four for the Tigers.
Rensselaer has outshot Princeton in all games 224-106, though Princeton averages 26.5 per game to 22.4 for the Engineers. Rensselaer averages a fairly consistent 22.3 shots per game in non-league games and 22.5 in league games.

The 150th anniversary of Princeton Athletics is a week away. The first intercollegiate athletic event in school history was a baseball game against Williams on Nov. 22, 1864. It was five years later that Princeton took on Rutgers in the first college football game ever played, on Nov. 6, 1869.
Men's hockey is in its 111th season, after playing its first game on Nov. 30, 1900.
Men's hockey was the eighth varsity sport that Princeton fielded.

Princeton's 2014-15 captain, Tyler Maugeri, has yet to play this season. He is Princeton's career leader among active players in goals (17), assists (22) and points (39).
* * *
Princeton was picked to finish 12th in the ECAC preseason poll. The Tigers are currently tied for seventh, though each team has played either two or four games.
* * *
Princeton had two players in NHL Prospect Development Camps this past summer; Mike Ambrosia with the Devils and Ryan Siiro with the Islanders.
* * *
Princeton will be on the road again next week, when it travels to St. Lawrence and Clarkson.
After that, Princeton will host Michigan State in a pair of games at Baker Rink on the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving and then return to the ECAC schedule with home games against Harvard and Dartmoth on Dec. 5 and Dec. 6.
