• Princeton will have its second game in the Wooden Legacy, an eight-team event Thursday through Sunday in Fullerton and Anaheim, California, Friday afternoon. The game continues Princeton's first visit to Southern California for a game since Dec. 27-28, 1969, when the Tigers competed in the Bruin Classic hosted by John Wooden's UCLA Bruins. That was the second of two times Wooden coached against Princeton, both against Pete Carril in back-to-back years. The previous year at Madison Square Garden, Wooden's AP No. 1-ranked Bruins beat Carril's Tigers 83-67, and in 1969 in Westwood, Princeton came within a bucket of upsetting the No. 2-ranked Bruins, 76-75.
• Princeton and San Diego have met only once, in a preliminary-round game of the 1984 NCAA Tournament held at The Palestra in Philadelphia, somewhere Princeton visits every year to play Penn. Princeton won the game 65-56 and advanced to a first-round game against UNLV in Salt Lake City, Utah, which the Rebels won 68-56.
• The Toreros are strong from the field so far on the season, averaging a 49.8 percent clip from the field overall. While teams are shooting 44.7 percent from the field against USD, they are shooting just 30.9 percent from 3-point range against the Toreros. Princeton is shooting 34.5 percent from 3-point range so far while taking an average of seven more 3-point tries per game than its foes. USD's high shooting percentage suggests a challenge for the Tigers on defense, as Princeton's opponents are shooting an average of 45 percent from the field so far.
• USD senior Johnny Dee is having a high-scoring season so far, averaging 20.4 points per game. Dee has taken nearly twice as many shots as any other USD player so far, with 65 tries for Dee and 33 for the next-closest teammate, Chris Anderson. Dee has also tried 46 of USD's 94 3-point attempts while making 22 of the team's 35.
• Princeton has rebounded from slow starts and slumps before under Mitch Henderson. The Tigers started 1-5 in Henderson's first season of 2011-12 while having to replace Dan Mavraides '11 and Kareem Maddox '11, two key members of the 2011 Ivy League championship team. The Tigers went 19-7 the rest of the way that year. The team started 1-3 and 5-7 in 2012-13 after moving on from the graduation of Douglas Davis '12, finishing the season 12-4 after the 5-7 start. Last season, after a 12-3 start while adjusting to life without Ian Hummer '13, the Tigers hit a bump by going 0-3 and 3-5 to start the Ivy League season before closing the campaign by winning six of their last seven games.
• Over the first five games last season, 325 of 1,000 minutes went to freshmen and sophomores for the Tigers. Over the first four games this season, 622 of 1,000 minutes have gone to freshmen and sophomores.
• Princeton achieved its first single-turnover game last time out against UTEP with seven. It was the second time in five games this season that Princeton won the turnover battle (George Mason).
• Of Princeton's 314 points so far, 296, or 89.5 percent, have been scored by non-seniors. Princeton's top six scorers on per-game average are non-seniors, and five of those are freshmen or sophomores (Weisz, Cook, Miller, Bell, Caruso).
• Princeton coach Mitch Henderson is presently ninth on the program's all-time wins list, but seventh place isn't far off. He's now at 59 wins, behind predecessor Sydney Johnson (66) and John Thompson III (68). Both are fellow Tiger alumni, Johnson (head coach from 2007-11) in the Class of 1997 and Thompson (head coach from 2000-04) in the Class of 1988.
• In 58 Ivy League seasons, Princeton has posted 52 winning Ivy seasons, four 7-7 finishes and just two losing records.
 |
• The 1984 game against Princeton was USD's first Division I NCAA Tournament apparance, and the Toreros have made three more since, in 1987, 2003 and 2008. As a No. 13 seed in 2008, USD upset UConn 70-69 in overtime for its only NCAA Tournament win. That season was also Bill Grier's first as USD's head coach, and the CIT quarterfinal run last year was the team's first postseason appearance since 2008.
• As young as the Tigers are, the Toreros are that experienced. Of the team's 25 starts so far (five across five games), 22 have gone to juniors or seniors. Sophomore Brett Bailey, who has started three of the first five games, is the only USD player to start and not be a junior or senior.
• Though Johnny Dee has scored more than a quarter of the team's points this season, USD has eight players averaging between two and five points per game.
• USD hasn't scored fewer than 67 points in a game this season and has broken 70 in four of its five contests. Princeton's season high is 68 points, and the Tigers' opponents have scored more than 63 points just twice this season.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 59-36.
Under Henderson, Princeton is 31-9 at home, 28-14 in the Ivy League, and 18-3 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 46-11 when leading at the half under Henderson.
Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04).
Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons.
Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95.
Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14.
Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield).
Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11.
