L 75-65 • Box Score Princeton led early against San Diego, but a 13-0 first-half run put the Toreros ahead for good. The Tigers cut the deficit to four in the second half but got no closer, having a two-minute scoreless drought after pulling within 64-60 with less than four minutes to go. Foul trouble plagued the Tigers, who had two players foul out and was whistled for 27 fouls to USD's 13.

• Princeton will wrap its play Sunday in the Wooden Legacy, an eight-team event in Fullerton and Anaheim, California. The San Jose State game will conclude Princeton's first visit to Southern California for a game since Dec. 27-28, 1969, when the Tigers competed in the Bruin Classic hosted by John Wooden's UCLA Bruins. That was the second of two times Wooden coached against Princeton, both against Pete Carril in back-to-back years. The previous year at Madison Square Garden, Wooden's AP No. 1-ranked Bruins beat Carril's Tigers 83-67, and in 1969 in Westwood, Princeton came within a bucket of upsetting the No. 2-ranked Bruins, 76-75.
• Princeton and San Jose State have never met, though it'll be the second straight tournament in which Princeton will end its tournament against a Mountain West foe. In the CBI quarterfinals last season, Princeton fell to Fresno State.
• The Tigers' youth movement continued Friday in the 75-65 loss to San Diego. Of the game's 200 minutes, 190 went to non-seniors, a season-low total. Since sophomore Steven Cook replaced senior Ben Hazel in the starting lineup in the UTEP game, just 22 of the 400 minutes Princeton played in the Wooden Legacy went to seniors.
• Princeton will be the third Ivy League team to play in the Honda Center. Cornell played there in the 2008 NCAA Tournament, losing to Stanford, and Penn played there on Dec. 10, 2011 against UCLA while Pauley Pavilion was undergoing renovations. Neither team came home with a win.
• No matter what, Princeton will win Sunday. San Jose State has a Princeton on its roster in junior transfer Princeton Onwas, who won't be playing as he's sitting out the season due to NCAA transfer rules after coming over from Utah.
• No player of the eight teams in the Wooden Legacy has played more in this year's event than Spencer Weisz, who has played 74 of 80 possible minutes. No other player had logged more than 69 of 80 minutes.
• Princeton's defense has hurt the Tigers so far, as opponents are shooting 44.6 percent overall and 48.4 percent from 3-point range. Princeton is hitting at a 40.3 percent clip overall, but just 33.8 percent from beyond the arc, where Princeton has taken 130 tries in six games compared to 91 for its opponents.
• Princeton has been out-assisted in each of its two games at the Wooden Legacy. The last time Princeton's opponents had more assists than the Tigers in back-to-back games was just before the conference portion of the 2012-13 season, at Akron and Elon.
• Princeton outshot San Diego Friday 45.1 percent to 42.6 percent, the first time since the season opener that Princeton had a better field goal percentage than its opponent.
• Princeton has rebounded from slow starts and slumps before under Mitch Henderson. The Tigers started 1-5 in Henderson's first season of 2011-12 while having to replace Dan Mavraides '11 and Kareem Maddox '11, two key members of the 2011 Ivy League championship team. The Tigers went 19-7 the rest of the way that year. The team started 1-3 and 5-7 in 2012-13 after moving on from the graduation of Douglas Davis '12, finishing the season 12-4 after the 5-7 start. Last season, after a 12-3 start while adjusting to life without Ian Hummer '13, the Tigers hit a bump by going 0-3 and 3-5 to start the Ivy League season before closing the campaign by winning six of their last seven games.
• Over the first six games last season, 386 of 1,200 minutes went to freshmen and sophomores for the Tigers. Over the first six games this season, 812 of 1,200 minutes have gone to freshmen and sophomores.
• Of Princeton's 379 points so far, 341, or 90 percent, have been scored by non-seniors. Princeton's top six scorers on per-game average are non-seniors, and five of those are freshmen or sophomores (Weisz, Cook, Miller, Bell, Caruso).
• Princeton coach Mitch Henderson is presently ninth on the program's all-time wins list, but seventh place isn't far off. He's now at 59 wins, behind predecessor Sydney Johnson (66) and John Thompson III (68). Both are fellow Tiger alumni, Johnson (head coach from 2007-11) in the Class of 1997 and Thompson (head coach from 2000-04) in the Class of 1988.
• In 58 Ivy League seasons, Princeton has posted 52 winning Ivy seasons, four 7-7 finishes and just two losing records.
 |
• The Spartans were forecasted 11th in the Mountain West Conference preseason poll and have made three NCAA Tournament appearances, most recently in 1996, where they fell in the first round to eventual NCAA champion Kentucky. The Tigers were also in the draw that year, with Mitch Henderson and crew upsetting defending champion UCLA. Princeton has been back to the dance five times since.
• SJSU opened the season 6-6 in 2013-14 but had a challenging remainder of the season. After the 6-6 start, conference play began and the Spartans went 1-18 the rest of the way to finish 7-24. The team returns both of its double-figure point-per-game scorers from a year ago in Rashad Muhammad (13.2 ppg 2013-14) and Jaleel Williams (10.6 ppg in 2013-14), but SJSU is led by junior transfer Frank Rogers, who came from the University of San Francisco and sat out last season due to transfer rules. Rogers averages 10.8 points and 6.4 boards to lead the team in both categories thsi season.
• The Spartans are 1-5 with a season-opening win over Bethesda Christian University, a school in Anaheim and a member of the National Christian College Athletic Association, before going 0-5 since against Division I programs with losses to Portland, Pepperdine, Cal State Fullerton, Washington and Western Michigan.
• The Spartans have been outshot on the season 38.3 percent to 40.9 percent overall and 32.2 percent to 39.8 percent from 3-point range. That, coupled with averaging 15.7 turnovers per game, four more than their opponents, has averaged the team 7.6 fewer ppg than their opponents.
• Nine Sparatans have started a game so far and only Jaleel Williams and Jalen James have started all six contests.
• SJSU head coach Dave Wojcik is in his second year leading the team. The Tigers defeated Dave's brother Doug Wojcik in 2010-11 when Doug was the head coach at Tulsa.

Mitch Henderson '98 is in his third season as Princeton's head coach. His overall record at Princeton is 59-37.
Under Henderson, Princeton is 31-9 at home, 28-14 in the Ivy League, and 18-3 in the Ivy League at home. Princeton is 46-11 when leading at the half under Henderson.
Henderson is the first Princeton coach since John Thompson III '88 (2000-04) to have winning seasons in each of his first three campaigns. He is the sixth Princeton coach to accomplish that, following Frederick Luehring (1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff '44 (1962-67), Pete Carril (1967-96), Bill Carmody (1996-2000) and Thompson III '88 (2000-04).
Henderson is in ninth place on the Princeton all-time wins list, with predecessor Sydney Johnson '97 in eighth with 66 wins over four seasons.
Henderson was a second-team All-Ivy Leaguer in 1998, an honorable mention All-Ivy Leaguer in 1997, and was a two-time Ivy Rookie of the Week in 1994-95.
Henderson graduated as the fourth-leading assist man in program history (kept since 1974-75) and is now sixth, having been surpassed by two of his players, Ian Hummer '13 and T.J. Bray '14. Henderson graduated fifth in career steals (kept since 1974-75) and is now ninth, having been passed by former teammate Gabe Lewullis '99, current San Diego Padre Will Venable '05, Marcus Schroeder '10 and his former player T.J. Bray '14.
Henderson is one of six Princeton alumni who are current Division I head coaches, including John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Joe Scott '87 (Denver), Mike Brennan '94 (American), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond) and Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield).
Prior to Princeton, Henderson coached at Northwestern for 11 seasons under his final head coach at Princeton, Bill Carmody, from 2000-11.
