PRINCETON, N.J. – The Princeton University sprint football team closed out its 2014 season with a 48-6 loss to Post University.
The Tigers finish the year with a 0-7 mark, while the Eagles improved to 4-3 overall and 5-0 all-time against the Orange and Black.
Finding pay dirt on its first possession, Post capped off an 11-play, 66-yard drive with a 4-yard Joseph Lynch touchdown run. Forcing Princeton into a three-and-out, the Eagles took over on their own 35-yardline with 9:02 remaining in the opening period. Chewing up just over eight minutes of clock, the visitors pieced together another long drive, adding to their lead 15 plays later on a 7-yard Leslie Morgan scamper. Initially stopped up the middle, the Post running back bounced the play to the outside, walking into the endzone with 57 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Hoping to breathe life into the Tiger offense, Ahmed Musse returned the ensuing kick-off 51 yards to the Eagles' 39-yardline. Later facing a fourth-and-11, Chad Cowden completed a pass to Tyler Kaye over the middle to move the chains. Taking a shot downfield three plays later; Cowden was intercepted at the Post 10-yardline.
Looking to add to their tally, the Eagles marched 90 yards in eight plays. Needing to pick up 18 yards on third down after a holding penalty, Greg Volpe threw a 39-yard strike to Rahmi Roundtree, who powered his way across the goal line to make it 20-0 early in the second quarter. Forcing another three-and-out, the Eagles would get the ball back with 8:05 remaining in the half. Covering 70 yards in 3:47, Post tacked on another TD thanks to a four-yard Bryan Sheppard run.
Getting one last chance to pad its cushion before the intermission, the visitors took over on their own 42-yardline with 1:00 remaining. Needing just four plays, the Eagles stretched the lead to 34-0, with Volpe finding Jarrick Sharp on a 12-yard pass-and-catch.
With Post once again threatening on its opening possession of the second half, Princeton came up with a big stop on fourth down to take over on its own 17-yardline. After Cowden scrambled for 11 yards on first down, the Tigers kept it on the ground for four consecutive plays before a personal foul penalty added onto a seven-yard Nick Barnett run gave Princeton a first down in Eagles' territory.
Later facing a fourth-and-4, Cowden completed a 27-yard pass to Musse on the right sideline to keep the drive alive. Once again dropping back to pass on the next snap, Cowden found an open Chris McCord in the back left corner of the endzone to put the Tigers on the board. Recovering the onside kick, Princeton hoped to further trim the deficit, but the Tiger drive stalled with Post recording back-to-back sacks on third and fourth down to take over on its own 40-yardline.
Wasting little time adding to its tally, Post needed just 3:18 to cross the goal line. Volpe capped off the drive with a 30-yard pass to William Gardner. The Eagles finished with 565 yards of total offense, which included 373 on the ground. Lynch led all rushers with 94 yards on 14 carries (6.7 ypc), while Morgan had 76 yards on nine touches (8.4 ypc). Volpe completed 13 of his 20 passes for 192 yards and three touchdowns, while Roundtree led all receivers with four catches for 69 yards.
Cowden finished 9-for-27 for 96 yards, a touchdown, and four interceptions. Barnett rushed for 25 yards on eight carries (3.1 ypc), while McCord paced the Princeton receiving corps with a team-high three receptions for 22 yards. Defensively, A.J. Sibley had 10.5 tackles (6 solo) and a fumble recovery, while Haydn Melia made seven stops (5 solo).
